MY GARDEN IS PROTECTED !

Wow, susie....1000 posts!! I sure never anticipated that when you started this thread. I guess we have more cat folks than I would have anticipated.

Bella is extremely gentle, and never puts her claws out, or nips. But Lucky is a "love biter". He will very gently put his teeth on my hand, like a little nip, but very gentle. Purring loudly all the time.

Best Rsgards, Les

That picture reminds me of my ex-wife.

Hope everyone had a great day with family and friends. Logan and Jackson say "woof" to all the kitties on this thread. That's my husband in the background in his jammies so had to crop the picture (lol) [emoji175][emoji175]

those guys are definitely cuties.
my kits got some milk for thanksgiving because they don't like cooked meat or even raw birds they don't catch themselves.

what did the pups get.?

Thanks! They're good boys [emoji175][emoji847] Jackson got a bit of turkey and some mashed sweet potatoes. Logan is still on a restricted diet and had his prescription dog food and the special biscuits which he loves. He sees the vet soon to decide if he can go back to regular food. People food may never be on the menu for Logan if we want him to stay well. [emoji45] They were happy nonetheless! [emoji847][emoji175][emoji175]

here's something interesting.
my kits only meow at me, n only if they want something.
but, they do talk to each other,
drifter taught her kits this quiet whrrrr sound, that meant ''come here'' .
cud still uss this, but now i think it means '' it's me''.
he always says this if he leaps to her position, to avoid a fight.
except for hissing, this seems to be their only verbal communication,

Very special that you have discovered their secret language. It shows that you three are truly a family. That's their"circle of trust" and you're right there in it! [emoji4][emoji4]

By the way, susie, I think you are right on point with the kitty language.

Best Regards, Les

good news today. cud was growling at drifter.
i never saw this before so i looked closer.
he had a mouse in his mouth!
he just didn't wanna share.
drifter wouldn't steel it anyway. she finds her own.
i do remember this growling over a mouse when the kits were babes.
when one finally caught one drifter brot, he growled at his sibs like all get out.

Good news about Cud's mouse. Sometimes it takes longer for some kits to come of age than for others! Good work cud! [emoji4][emoji175]

I have a possum living under my deck and my two dogs have become"hunters" all of a sudden. I don't think they can get to it because my deck is very low and surrounded by strong chicken wire that is pretty tightly attached. Not sure how it gets in and out from under there, but it seems to. Once in a while, it's out from under there and they startle it and it really does play dead! They don't seem to want to really catch it and my vet says it doesn't share parasites with people or cats or dogs. People who have horses need to be careful because it's urine on horse feed can be dangerous to the horses. And it can bite (big teeth!!) But theyre usually shy and play possum instead. Anyone know how to convince it to find another home? So far the dogs only bark at it till it plays possum and then I chase them inside. It comes and goes and we see it only every few months.

don't take that possum lightly. i had one kill a couple chickens.
he then played dead til i shot him in the head.
he could damage a little doggie.
no mistake here, both the possum n dead chickens were in the coop.
before that i didn't know they killed chickens so i left them alone.
no more.

Thanks for the advice. I always am out with the dogs when they're in the backyard. But my husband watches them from the porch room. I'll tell him to go out and at least stand on the deck. When it's dark, I throw on all the spotlights and I walk the perimeter of the yard with a big flashlight before I let the dogs out of the porch room onto the deck and into the back yard. I will be much more careful then. If the possum's out, the dogs are leash walked in the front along the road. I've never seen the possum in front but I carry the heavy flashlight out front too. Nobody's sorry for being too careful when it comes to pets vs varmints and wild critters! I can carry my gun, but unfortunately my neighbors live too close for me to shoot the possum while it's in my yard.

Jake is beautiful. Looks like a beloved kitty I had when we first got married named PC. That kitty lived a happy and pampered life for 21 years. May you and Jake be blessed with long life together as well [emoji4][emoji175]

i love tuxedos like jake.
drifter is marked like that n taught me something.
black n white don't sound like camo colors, but they are.
drifter melts into the scenery, even tho nothing else is black n white.

cuddles is almost a year old.
a young adult, just like drifter was when we met.

so, i think i can comment on the differences between feral cats n house cats.
the main difference is that drifter is professionally paranoid.
even when sound asleep between my legs, she is always ready to leap for safety.
she is not hand shy in the house. i can touch her.
not outside tho. i can't get near her there, unless she approaches me to get a drink of water.
drifter is always alert, even after 14 months in the house.
cud is not afraid of anything.
he can come to my side when i'm shooting, tho the vacuum bothers him.
drifter has made peace with the vacuum, if she's up on the couch back.

drifter mostly trusts me, but only as much as she trusts anything.
she demands respect n i can take no liberties with her.

cud trusts me implicitly.
i can pick him up, toss him in the air, squish him to pieces n he doesn't mind/
he knows i won't hurt him.
this is handy if i wanna take a nap n want to be purred to sleep.
he loves being cuddled, which is how he got his name.
this is not so good if he is doing something bad.
if drifter is doing something bad she will stop if i shout no.
this might have saved her life when she was drinking fertilizer.
cud ignores my shouts.
as to behavior, cud is rambunctious., but probably because he's a boy.

drifter comports herself like a lady.
if she wants to go out, she sits by the door.
if she's hungry, she sits by her bowl.
cud yells to go out, or in, or to get fed.
making noise outside may get him killed, but he cries to come in when he;s 8' off the ground.
drifter won't ever purr or meow much, but she has in the past, so she is not mute.

cud is nocturnal n i can't change that.
even if awake, he doesn't like leaving the house during the day,
but around 11pm he demands to be let out.
this will work fine until nights get cold.
i won;t let him out if the forecast is under 20 degrees.

i suspect drifter is normally nocturnal, but she changed her behavior to accommodate me.
she sleeps when i do.
i'm important to drifter.
she remembers what life was like without me.

i no longer know who is killing for me.
drifter brot a baby mouse into the garden.
i praised her, but she dropped it n let it get away so she could
catch it, over n over.
i have ruined her.
she never used to play with her food so much.
i'm feeding too much but it's hard for me to cut food when no one except me is fat.
on the other hand, i see cud with a mouse a couple times/week.
he's playing with them too, but i know when he spends all night outside he gets hungry.
these critters like eating every 4 hours, so he must be doing his job.

so these guys are very different, but also the same.
when i call them in, i see them walking down the hall side by side.
somehow, they look like an outlaw motorcycle gang, looking for a fight.

they don't care about coyotes.
they know they are apex predators.

Wishing a Merry Christmas to all my friends on this post and to all their 4 footed family members and human family as well!
