My hand hurts! - M&P Shield 9mm

My first outing with a M.2.0 9mm caused the same pain in the web of my hand. But it was clear to me the grip stippling under the beaver tail was the cause. A friend recommended the Hogue slipon grip but getting it on the Shield was difficult at best. I had my local smith take the "points" off the stippling and problem solved.

The Shield in 9 is an amazing soft shooter

You may have a poor grip situation going on

1) Get a bike inner tube, and cut a small section for your grip
The effect is a fuller grip feel, and a bit of a cushion

2) Get a higher grip on the pistol. I have seen people grip a pistol too low
and it causes an extra "torque" on the wrist

3) consider looking at lower recoil ammo (its a thing)

I have a Shield in 40, and many people love shooting it

Good luck

I don't care for the grip shape of the 9mm Shield. It feels like I'm holding a piece of 1/2" plywood. I don't have that problem with my Kahr CM9. Here is a good tip on grip, IMHO. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXWoJ2arPuI[/ame]

I've noticed this also

I have the shield 9mm and a Glock 26 9mm. the glock is much softer shooter than the Shield. It must be the double stack thick grip vs. skinny single stack grip.

I shoot a 9 mm Shield a lot and it doesn't hurt my hands. I have never heard my wife or daughter complain about theirs hurting their hands either. I installed the Talon stick on grip on all of them. It prevents the pistol from slipping in your hand.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Glad your new M2.0 Shield is working out for you!

I have a M1.0 Shield 40 and shoot ~200 rds at a time and there is no discomfort what so ever.

Sorry, but it is you.

The Shield is much thinner than the Glock and you are likely not gripping the weapon tight enough or are not placing your hand high enough on the back strap to maintain the proper grip.

Try to concentrate on the above and I bet your feelings will change. The Shield in 9mm is a very soft shooting pistol.

This^ I had the same issue with it hurting the same area when I first got mine, a tighter grip did the trick

My 2.0 is new. I've got around 500 rds through it at this time. I used Magtech 115gr, Blazer 115gr, WWB115gr and 124 nato, Sig Elite115gr, Win Train & Defend 147gr. All rounds performed as they should and my hand is not sore. ?? As others recommended, focus on your grip and see if that helps.

Update:

This original thread (my thread) was from back in 2014, when I was a novice.

I've learned a lot since then. My new M&P Shield 2.0 (bought it 27th April 2018), feels good and I've learned from an instructor how to properly grip and handle this weapon. [emoji41]

Thanks for taking the time to post images, etc. Much appreciated.

This is rather weird. I felt like I was holding the gun properly. It is not like this is my first time shooting, another reason I found it weird that my hand was/is hurting. I could hardly pick up a 15lbs box today.

I'll do some dry pulls later this evening.

My suggestion to anyone in this situation:
while your right hand is recovering, use this time to learn to also shoot with your left hand. It's an important skill you should practice anyway.

There might be another problem. I am a heavy computer user for work and 15 years ago I injured my hand. The constant computer work did not allow the hand to heal and I developed sharp pains in my hands while shooting.

It was inflammation problem.

You might have another issue that the shooting is aggravating.

I found I could not shoot my glock 19 without stabbing pain. I had to rest my hand and found I needed a minor surgical procedure.

Get a HOGUE HANDALL grip. It makes a big difference. Funny, I think the Shield has less recoil and is easier to shoot than the Glock 19.

Arthur Rightis is a *******!

There could be another problem, as we get older, Arthur Rightis keeps trying to aggravate us!

This is the first thing I add on smaller pistols.

At that point get a bigger pistol.

Small pistols really require a bit of technique to shoot them. A positive is that it should improve you large pistol handling.

I hate my keltec p3at but I do occasionally put several mags through it. Last time I ran a box of copper SD ammo through it to check reliability and drew some blood on my trigger finger. With that pistol grips don't seem to make any difference its so small.

The Shield was never intended as a range toy. It was designed to be carried a lot and shot a little! You can't put a Buick though a key hole either!

My hands can hurt before a range trip, and can feel the same after regardless of which handguns i take along (22 and/or 9's). I did just add a Hogue handall to my shield, seemed to help a little. Put it his way, my hand hurt no more after my range trip yesterday than before.
So as the aches and pains of getting 'mature' continue to creep in, i have no issue adding on grips or whatever if it helps me out. After all, i enjoy shooting all my guns whether they are intended for being a range piece or not. If i can't run as many rounds as i want thru one for practice or fun, no reason for me to keep it.

Long story short lol, adding a grip can be a cheap way to help a little.

Get a hogue 18400 grip. I've shot my shield without one for a year now and after adding one the difference is night and day. While I don't shoot it a ton on the range, I always felt like after a sweaty hand the gun wanted to cant in my hand. With the hogue that's all gone. But your hand shouldn't hurt with proper grip. So I think this is a personal issue.
