For years I’ve been trying to find a decent red dot mount for my Model 41 and Leupold Delta Point Pro and had to settle for a Weigatinny rail, a solution that worked but which I was never really happy with.

This solution with a Leupold DPP mounted to a Leupold red dot rail mount in turn mounted to the Weigatinny rail which was mounted to the firearm was simply clunky and rather difficult to use in practice - with the red dot so high above the line of the barrel I regularly faltered finding the dot for timed competitions (ie steel challenge).

I know there are some nice low profile direct mount solutions produced in the States - but I have not been able to find anyone who will ship one to Australia ......

However the Leupold rail mounts are readily available for about AUD80.00 so armed with a spare one (in case this didn’t work) and my neighbours small hobby mill I have managed to at least do away with the Weigatinny rail to lower the sight @10mm (so far):

I simply used the Weig’ rail to accurately replicate its mounting holes in the Leupold mount, recessed the holes 3mm, milled off the rail mounts to flatten its base and notched the aft end of the mount by @2mm to fit around the M41 rear sight:

I confess that I'm not quite finished with it yet as I can easily shave another 5 to 8mm off of the centre of the base to profile it to the top of the barrel but the job today was to see if we could get it trimmed, drilled and accurately lined up and I am really happy with the outcome....(with enormous thanks to my neighbour who drove the mill).

I will trim it down but I used enough of my neighbours Christmas break today just doing this so I’ll go and use it for a few weeks and will hit him up again another time (or will wait until I get my own mill...)

It looks much better:

noting the tunnel through the middle from the original locking screw looks a bit whacky....

And it lined up perfectly as soon as it was mounted - ie without any adjustment the red dot sat nicely vertical to the barrel laser sighter at about 3’ and covered it perfectly at about 20’.

at 3’:

That looks like a great solution. I use a Weaver rail on one of mine but I'm mounting an Ultradot, which is a lot longer. Where there's a will, there's a way. Nothing better than having a neighbor who is a machinist.

My 41 with a BME dovetail mount

I would have much preferred the BME dovetail mount and I did in fact find someone who would ship one (JLN Global), but the cost if the shipping was incredibly close to the same cost as the mount and by the time I converted that to AUD it really wan’t feasible.

With access to a milling machine I'm surprised you didn't mill a weaver rail cuts directly in the top of the barrel. I have seen this done quite a few times, and I believe the Performance Center version currently has that option from the factory. I first saw this done by Frank Glenn on a friends Mod 41.

Not so surprising that I didn’t really, I don’t want to modify the gun itself in any way - doing so might suit the Leupold weaver style mount but I don’t think it do much for the value of the firearm.

If I could afford it (and if they’d ship to Australia) I’d go for a new Clarke custom BOP 6 1/2” barrel.
