Your point was well made, I'm still laughing.

Amazing that we don't like something yet what we like is almost the same.
Actually, MIM and castings have little in common. Both come out of a mold, but their manufacturing methods and metallurgy are completely different.

MIM parts have 95 to 98 percent of the density of a comparable forged part. Casting, much less.

Evidently, my simple posts are above your head. You seem to have lost track some time ago. LOL. Same goes for your buddy, Wyatt, who doesn't get it either. LOL again.

I guess I'll chime in.

I don't like the lock. And I have absolutely NO valid reason to feel that way. I don't carry, I'm not a cop or anything like that. My guns are like golf clubs. Toys. They go to the range, shoot holes in paper, and go back home to be cleaned and put away (in a safe) till the next playtime. If I owned a gun with an IL it would never be locked, so what does it matter? Worst case scenario, if the lock somehow magically engaged itself, the only ramification would be I just couldn't shoot targets that day. Its really no big deal. AND YET I HATE THE LOCK!!! In my recent quest for a .44 of some sort, I could have easily just purchased a new 29 or 24 Classic, or even a Mountain Gun. But I held out for an older, pre lock 24-3.

It really makes no sense, but we hobby shooters are an emotional lot. We don't like it when our icons are messed with. For the record, I also hate what Remington did to their 870 and 1100 shotguns. I hate the Browning Cynergy (but I love the Citori.) If I had been alive in '64 I'm sure I would have been really angry with Winchester.

Now I can't debate with people who rely on their guns as serious tools. You guys have a very different set of requirements that I have absolutely no business even commenting on. But speaking as a hobby shooter, I really hate that lock.

And don't even get me started on that frame mounted firing pin! And what's this MIM crap? I swear...

Pat, go ahead and get one of those new S&W guns anyway. They're still good guns. Quit paying attention to what the soreheads say. I chose to get a Ruger Redhawk for a .44 mag, and some old sorehead named Wyatt had the gall to make some negative remark about it, as well. Can you imagine a knowledgeable man implying that a Redhawk was a weaker gun than an S&W? What does that tell you? A soreheaded person is just a constant gripe. I wonder what he's going to do when all the pre-locks are hoarded away. He doesn't like IL's and he doesn't like Rugers, so I guess he'll try Charter, HiPoint, or Taurus.

AKR, calm down. I don't think you were being bashed but more of a point being made.

"My point was that many fine guns have some features that could be improved, or done away with."

The above is correct and directly to the point.

Way back when S&W quit producing the triple lock the same cries went out. After all S&W took away a system that assured the cylinder and barrel were in perfect alignment when the trigger as pulled. And they replaced it with a system that had slop in it when the trigger was pulled. You just don't hear from these people as they're long gone now.

Heck, I don't like a seat belt in my car or a lawn mower that I have to hold the handle for it to run. But I have to live with these features now.

I own 3 guns with the lock and have no complaints with them. In reality I find them better made then some of the Bangor Punta guns I've had. I can't complain about the accuracy with the newer guns either, all 3 of them are fantastic.

I wish the lock weren't there because that's a little piece of my freedom that was taken away. But in reality I've found the new guns to be great. Shoot, I'd add #4 in a heartbeat.

I'm thankful for seatbelts in my car because they save lives. I'm thankful for any mower that has an engine or a motor. I'm sure a lot of the guys didn't know that any other kind ever existed.

RedBerens, I have to ask, did the grips come on the gun in the picture? I have the same gun and it came with rubber grips.

I replaced them with rosewood grips from S&W but I like the grips on yours.

No sir, I added those later. I found the pair on Ebay. I tried to make her as 'retro' as possible by also adding a cylinder latch from the new Classics line.

I still use the Ahrends finger groove stocks that came with it, but the old Target stocks really give it character.

Landric, how'd you make out, get either?

You mean you haven't "wired around" the stupid mower safety device yet?

The auction isn't over yet, but so far no one has outbid me. We will see.

RedBerens, like you I also have a 29-8 that I bought back in 2005 or so. At the time I wanted a blued Mountain Gun, and the lock version was the only one I could find. It has been an accurate and--so far--reliable firearm. I like it very much. I have not yet disabled the lock but I intend to do so. Why? For the same reasons others have done so: I never use it, it (the lock, not the gun) is ugly, it's potentially unreliable, and the reason it was forced upon us has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with politics.

Will I buy another gun with the lock? That really depends on whether I can find what I am looking for in a pre-lock or non-S&W model. In other words, probably not.

I am sure this has been discussed a million times here, but why on earth doesn't S&W make the IL optional? Now that there are laws that protect gun manufacturers from lawsuits, it seems that this would be the most sensible solution.

Hi, my name is MeAmMe and I just bought a new
Model 14-8 Classic in nickel and it came with two little keys. I'm kinda glad so many folk don't like the keys. Most likely was the same discussion at the end of the P&R era. I don't really think the lock will jump out and bother me, and most definitely do not plan to use it as my personal defense gun lest needed while I'm a shootin' it.
Lots of nice S&Ws being made still and time changes things. It will be much easier and most likely less expensive for me to grab a few of the newbies with so few folk fightin' over them on the auction sites. I don't really care for them, but will not let it stop my S&W likings. Funny how the 25-2 is such a shooting star and it was not recessed.

I would think that with enough pressure and lost revenues, this would fall into the "Change the things that I (we) can" category. It can't hurt to keep the pressure on!

He has vanished as far as I am concerned.
