Sheltering in place has me shopping...I've had my eye on a 627 for over a year, and finally picked one yesterday. Can't wait to shoot it! I have a few questions that maybe some of you 627 owners or revolver experts can guide me on:

1. This is my first revolver that has moon clips.
Do any of you that have the 627 or other moon clip ready revolvers and shoot it without the moon clips?
2. The grips...While attractive, the wood grips are a little small for my large hands. I recognized this long before I bought it, and I'm sure I can shoot OK with the factory wood grip, but I'd love to find a NON FINGER groove rubber grip that covers the backstrap with a little longer extension on the bottom- if possible. I'm coming up empty in my search. Plenty of Hogue/Pachmayr options with finger grooves which I generally dislike. Any suggestions? Anyone modify a rubber revolver grip to remove the finger grooves?
3. Holsters-I've settled on a Simply Rugged Sourdough pancake for cross draw/OWB, but would also like to add a Mic or similar kydex trigger guard holster for when I pack the 627 into a chest pack. I can't find one of those for an N-Frame anywhere. Any suggestions on where I can find one? Anyone out there making them for the larger revolvers?

Thanks in advance for the help...

I love moon clips. I have plenty on hand and will load up 20-30-40 or whatever I need the day before I go shooting. I usually sit in the recliner while the news is on and get this accomplished

The same goes for de-mooning. Sitting in the big chair I de-moon and drop the brass into to the proper caliber bucket that is heading to the tumbler.

As you can see from the picture above, I have a fondness for the old factory combat grips

The Hogue impact absorbing grips for the Models 460 & 500 will fit your revolver. The material stretches over the extra metal in the N-frame.

These finger grooves do not fit my hands so I used the Dremel sanding drum and removed the bottom finger grip leaving only the top one. It works pretty well.

Everybody is making holsters.

I bought the holster Smith & Wesson sells on their sight when I bought the revovler. I am pretty sure that Gene DeSantis makes it for the factory.

Just because something is not listed on a website it does not mean they do not sell it. I am certain Galco ill make you a holster. Just call your favorite Holster maker and order one. You will be surprised at how much can be accomplished with a single phone call.

I have several other holsters that I have used. Any holster listed as a 3" N-frame holster will work just fine. No one will notice that it is 3/8" too long

Thanks for the reply, colt. Do you ever shoot the gun without moon clips? For the grips-I like the dremel idea. That may be the direction I go in unless I can find a non finger groove option that covers the backstrap. As for holster, I've been happy with Simply Rugged, but really want to find the 'minimalist' trigger guard cover for when I carry other than on my waist...

About the only time I do not use moon clips is when we are out chronographing ammunition

Other than that I like them

Though I understand that not everybody is comfortable with moon clips and that is fine.

Awesome! Those snubs are eye catching. I just won the 629 PC version on GB for $750 today! New, too!

I have two revolvers that take moonclips and they fire without the clips, you just sometimes have to help them out. If you want them all to extract, the clips are needed.

Enjoy your new 627! I had a difficult time deciding between the 627 and 629. I kay have to choose both eventually! :)

Hi, I have the same gun and can handle some of your ?s. I have not used the moon clips with my gun. To be more precise, I haven't even seen them: they are prolly under the foam lining. They may be designed for match reloading, but as the .357 is a rimmed round, they serve no purpose for me.

Grips: Hogue does make a rubber RB-to-SB grip without finger grooves. I bought them from Midway and installed them on my 627 Pro Series, on which the finger groove Hogues were OED. Haven't gotten around to installing them on the 627 snub. They do work well on the Pro. Can't help you on holsters. Good shooting!

Thanks. I think I found the grips you are referring to. The ones I see don't cover the backstrap. Do yours cover the backstrap, or does it remain exposed?

With my 627 snub I had the 8 rounds in the cylinder in a moonclip, my reloads I did not have in moonclips. This is for sure and easier ejection of the first 8 rounds in a defensive situation. As for grips I went with VZ checkered on mine. For holsters I use Wright but I have had a number of Simply Rugged. They are great for hunting rigs but not my preference for EDC.

The grip definitely does cover the backstrap. No use to me otherwise. Midway offers them on page 1 of "Hogue Grips."

My M625 in .45ACP... I always shot it with the Moon-Clips. It makes for the fastest ejection of every single round instantly and make for the easiest reload a revolver can have. I timed ejection, reloading, and closing the cylinder to the same amount of time it took for me to eject an 8 round magazine out of my 1911, slam home a fresh magazine and slightly pull back on the slide sending a new round into the chamber thus closing the slide. All of my revolvers would be equipped with Moons if I could have it that way.

It's a very nice way to run a Revolver!

Thanks. I'm definitely going to spend some time shooting both with and without moon clips.

I use 5star speed loaders. When I carry the gun I like to have it loaded with a moon clip so I get a clean ejection of all 8 shells. Being cut for moons is a nice option and gives you the choice.

Thanks again. I found them. #25012. Going to get them ordered. Might try them on my 629 3" as well.

Correction- 25012 is without finger grooves but does NOT cover the backstrap. I'm back to the drawing board. The Hogue Tamer WITH finger grooves (don't want grooves) is the only Hogue NFrame grip I can find that covers the backstrap.

I love my 627-5 snubbie. I've never tried moon clips for .38/.357, but I do use them for launching .38 super.

That is correct

Even the conversion grips have half of the back strap exposed

You will find the K/L/X frame tamers acceptable with the lower finger groove Dremeled off

If you were local, I would offer to let you shoot my 500 just to see how good they can be

I apologize. My bad. These grips are so comfy that I didn't even realize 1/2 of the backstrap is uncovered.

No worries. I went completely in a different direction and ordered the Pachmayr Diamond Pro. Unfortunately they have the grooves but the reviews are good, the profile isn't huge, and the backstrap is covered. If i can't tolerate the grooves, I'll bring out the Dremel for a little surgery.
