my response to "no guns allowed" sign

Simple. I respect business owners' sentiments as I hope others respect mine.

Now me I would have loaded the things into the cart and taken them to CS. I would then proceeded to explain to them this is the sale they lost by having the sign, while I was still carrying without their knowledge but I wouldn't have told them. Like most stores they don't know or care what other dangerous objects they sell, as long as it's not a firearm. Heck I bet you could have bought a .22 stud gun there with blanks.

I would have gone to the check out at the register with a full cart of very small products from all over the store. Once all of the items were rung up, I would have asked for the manager. Then we would walk to the no weapons sign and then back to the cashier. I would ask the manager to note all of the products that have been rung up and say, "in defiance to your sign you must void this sale and restock every item". I would do that several times a month and ask others to do the same. After a month of this, I'll bet the sign would come down.

And by the time you've done it twice the cops will be called the next time your face shows up! You're wasting their time - and yours.
More likelly it would just make the owner/manager despise gun owners all the more.

That kind of nonsense has absolutely no place in responsible gun ownership.

I have seen so much discussion on this topic and I HAVE to ask a question. "Since when does a store policy supersede a state law ???" I would think if in fact you have a concealed weapons permit that would tend to indicate the State has found you to be of worthy of a concealed permit therefore you are not in violation of any state law why on God's green earth would you be worried about some store's policy???
I have failed to note a time any subject was placed under arrest for violating a store policy, but then again I was just a street cop for 22 years and may have failed to see the legal power of a store policy in a court of law. Hey it's just my two cents worth from the Big Sky Country. My LT. always told me to keep my head down and my powder dry, he never said anything about being concerned regarding a store policy, guess he forgot to explain some things to me.

I'm not sure about "all" states but in most states it is the state's carry law that permits private businesses to decide whether they will allow or not allow carry. So its not that store policy supercedes state law, it's that state law allows businesses to decide what takes place on their property.

All they can ask you to do in some states is to leave or else be guilty of trespass. In others, it's a criminal offense subject to a fine. But, in either case, it's state law that allows stores to set policy.

If it comes down to violating the wishes of a store or leaving a handgun in my car, I'm taking it with me into the store. If I know the place I need to be (mostly my kid's school) is a gun free zone I make other arrangements for my carry piece. I have a small safe at work or I leave it home for that trip.

BTW, it is now a felony to have a weapon (even a pocket knife) on public school property in NY and certainly not worth the hassle or downside.

I'm sorry. This isn't really a flame. But what sort of history did you know or what sort of intel did you have that made you feel the need for protection in a hardware store?

And you made your Constitutional protest to the checkout clerk?

I don't know where you live but it's different here. I have a friend who is a county sheriff. He and his wife, along with me and my wife often go to "screenings" for upcoming movies. Most of the time they are "wanding" and searching people as we enter the theatre. When we get to the front of the line he just says "gun in this pocket...knife in this one". Sometimes they ask for his I.D. but they've never turned us away yet.

So what are they wanding you for ? I don't get it . Maybe you can only have just so many guns with you ,1. Gun doesn't matter .

I told my wife that until my "crystal ball" gets back from repairs, I'm carrying EVERYWHERE I'm allowed. Get use to it!

This is my practice too. Someone once asked me if I only carried in unsafe areas or everywhere I went.

My reply was that if I know an area is unsafe, I do everything I can to avoid it. It's the rest of the world, where the threat is unknown that I'm concerned about.

Concealed carry only works if you do so 24/7 when in public. You never know when you might need your ccw. I prefer to patronize like minded businesses, so I appreciate when shop owners advise me to shop elsewhere before I waste time spending money in their stores.
