My second Canadian Military S&W

A tardy response to this request.

There aren't many markings on this revolver. Crossed pennants on the frame in front of the cylinder on the left side, with the pennants repeated a couple of times on the back face of the cylinder, and the British viewers mark on the left side above the stocks. There are no markings on the bottom of the grip near the lanyard ring.

The photo below shows the marks on the frame (as well as highlighting some of the finish issues which don't affect the revolver's usability, nor my delight in owning it).

Marvelous post. Thank you for the very obvious effort you put into this documentation.

Everyone here has an insatiable appetite for threads like this, so never hesitate to do an update. If it is not too much of an imposition on your time, we would love to see detailed pictures of all the markings.

RangeRover,
Outstanding post. A nice revolver with tons of info about the previous owner's career during the Great War.
Concerning its medals and battle story, I suggest you to join this forum: Gentleman's Military Interest Club .
There are several collectors and researchers there that might be very useful to add further info about this officer career.

All the best,
Douglas

Thanks for the follow up and the photo of the British markings. It is obvious that the revolver saw years of hard service, perhaps it changed hands several times. It's good to see it respected and honored by its current owner.

How did a Canadian officer wind up with a British-marked revolver?

I would not be surprised to learn that, in the chaos of trench warfare, British revolvers often wound up in Canadian holsters and vice versa. We can only speculate about the trail it followed once it left the relative tranquility of the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield, crossed the channel, and made its way into France...

Thanks for the lead on the Gentlemen's Military Interests Club D Jr. I'll follow up.

I'm still hoping to get an appropriate .455 ammo pouch to go on the Sam Browne (and then I'll be even happier)
