It seems like, in their (NASCAR's) infinite wisdom, that stupid rear wing, on that stupid looking "stock" car, provides about 4000 lbs of LIFT when the car gets going backwards. That will make them fly everytime, I don't care how small of a restrictor plate they use. Unless, that is, NASCRAP makes them use a 1 bbl carb.

I quit watching NASCAR when i couldn't reconize the cars any longer.Still watch NHRA,but they are following NASCAR. :( It's all about the sponsors now.

Isn't that why they have that stupid looking flap on the roof of the car to counter act the other stupid flap?:)

Old guys whining! I love it!!

Yeah, I still remember Petty in a Superbird. Now that car I could recognize!

Now they are told how to drive the cars as well, as anyone who saw today's Talladega race can attest to. Pretty soon, they won't need drivers, they'll just build "image robots" to pilot the cars around the track.

I was born in 1941 and I can remember when there wasn't much difference between the track cars and some street cars. That was real stock car racing. Now they are all the same and who cares who wins. It is as exciting as professional wrestling. Larry

I think the stupid flaps on the roof were to keep the windshiels from blowing out when the car got backwards. I forget what changes were made that made the windshields blow out in the first place.

The fix for the rear wing will be a self destruct feature, so when the car goes backwards, the wing will be either be blown off the car or be forced into a attitude of DOWNFORCE instead of lift.

OR... get this crap.....Get rid of the stupid flap on the roof, and let the windshileds blow out. This might create some downforce across the hood and keep the backwards cars on the ground.

Wait a minute, I like it when the cars fly through the air and barrel roll, so scratch all that.

Isn't that what it is now, A car and android with ball cap covered with logos?? No offense meant to the actual drivers as I am sure it takes a lot of talent, fitness and guts to do what they do. It's just sooooo boring.

The roof flaps are to keep the car on the ground when it goes backward at 150 or so miles per hour. There is an explanation here:

HowStuffWorks "NASCAR Restraint System".

They worked just fine before the new style car. As stated, the large wing provides more lift when the car is going backward, than the hatch can overcome.

With the economy the way it is, this is no time to dump on NASCAR unless you want to see a bailout of Winnebago, Budweiser and Slim Jim.

NASCAR was about racing at one time - like already mentioned it is now about sponsers and marketing NASCAR stuff - big $$$ real big $$$ - I would rather watch the sports cars on a road circuit. The Vettes and Porches look like Vettes and Porches and they race in the rain. Why are NASCAR drivers are afraid of the rain? Surely Goodyear can make a rain tire.

No bumping in the corners? Please. Lets not sanitize this thing anymore then it already is. I should have spent more time watching football yesterday than nascar. At least in football they have not instituted a 'No Tackling' rule.

Bill France senior is probably turning over in his grave these days given the current state of affairs in nascar. Many years ago when nascar was first starting out many of the drivers were complaining and whining about various issues. The drivers tried to do the union type thing and Big Bill told them, "If you are scared to race then go home. We need real Racecar drivers in this series".

I propose the following:

- Replace the current 'competition director' Robin Pemberton (ex crew chief) with a recent driver. You want a Driver in charge of competition, not an owner or crew chief.

- Drop the Chase playoff system. It was first instituted to mimic the stick-and-ball games playoff systems but it just does not lend itself well to auto racing. In fact I believe it makes for worse racing over the course of the entire season.

- Retain the current advances in safety, particularly as they pertain to the drivers area.

- Have the cars run the new Camaro, Mustang, and Charger bodies as they come in production shape. This is supposed to be a series for performance type cars, not your grandmas Fusion or Camry.

- Knock the engine size down to reduce the speeds and open the rules to allow for more crew/driver input and creativity. I don't know that fans really care if the cars are going 200mph or 150mph as long as there is exciting action. Let the teams grow a small engine into more horsepower and greater speeds as it and the chassis is developed over time.

- Enough with the cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks. They make for a boring show. Establish tracks that require creativity and risk taking to run well at, the old Rockingham comes to mind.

I dont think there is an honest game on American TV be it motor sports, or ball game.
results are all bought and paid for.
If however, you really need an honest race, get under the hood of a car. Build that war machine. then go forth about the streets and get you some

Don't be surprised if that wing goes away next season. The new Nationwide series car has the same wheelbase as the Sprint cup car, but it has a spoiler on it. And next year when they use the new car in some Nationwide races, the Mustang will be eligible. Not sure about the Camaro and Charger.

I don't waste my time watching infomercials, to include NASCAR.

venomballistics- i agree totally. used to do that exact thing. don't work on them any more but still drive performance a car at almost 60yrs of age.

Im about 20 years behind in that race. Ive driven fast enough to outrun my youthful stupidity that caused me to do so in the first place. Still today ... give me that wild road iron. no other machine can feed the spirit like it

I got interested in NASCAR back in the late 60s. Thought the best period was when they had the Charger Daytonas, Torino Talledegas, Superbirds, and big hemi motors. Then Chevrolet started whining that they could not compete. Then Chevrolet started throwing money into NASCAR sponsorship. The next thing you know NASCAR is doing everything they can to make Chevrolet a winner. And the nonsense hasn't stopped. Restricter plates? Speed limits on pit road? Tracks that all look the same? It just isn't entertaining any more. And I am sick and tired of hearing about Dale Earnhardt Sr.. I am sorry that he died but I really don't know why Nascar never banned him from the sport. He was nothing more than a menace. If he didn't have the car or the talent to beat you, he would wreck you. What a hero.

Ya gotta have a favorite driver, 'cause the cars are all the same.

Nascar sucks always has and always will(to me). "Lets take left turns all day long"

And then nascar people complain when they race a road course. lol sad. If you fellas want to see some real racing watch an SCCA event. THe cars are the same cars me and you drive on the street, mostly a suspension upgrade and a little motor work. Very competive and its not all about the sponsers. Oh yeah and they turn the wheel BOTH ways!!!!! Wow who would of known a car could go left and right:p
just my $.02 take it for what its worth

I was a Nascar fan for years but I have really lost interst in it. This weeks race was a joke and even the drivers were bored and making statements that basically said that the people running Nascar don't get it and are not providing a quality event for the customers and for the drivers where they can drive and mix it up.

In 3 more races Nascar has a short period of time to come up with a fix for the problem other then making them go slower in single file for nearly 80% of the race because that is just plain BORING.

NASCAR attendance is down about 20% for the year, and there are reasons for that other than just the economy......

I never found watching cars race around in a circle very exciting. While I can appreciate the skills involved in wining in NASCAR, it just does nothing for me. Probably because being successful has more to do with car setup and drafting strategy than what I consider driving skills; braking, cornering, etc.

Like jdmdriver8 mentioned, SCCA is much more like it.

What really floats my boat is World Rally Cars. When it boils down to driving skills, I find WRC hard to beat.

One more thing: It takes a special kinda guy to be a rally navigator.

I don't know that fans really care if the cars are going 200mph or 150mph as long as there is exciting action.

It's not the speed, look at how popular the short tracks are. I'm addicted to NASCAR but Talladega was a snooze fest. They can't pass without drafting so they rode around single file. The safety is a good thing but they need more lead way in building the cars. All the same makes for a lousy race. The racing "back in the day" was not without boring finishes. Many races had 5 cars on the lead lap and 1/4 mile between 1st and 2nd. This crap "leave your team mate lead a lap to get his 5 points" sucks.

I have read this thread completely and find that my core beliefs have been shaken. I expect the next thing you will try to tell me is that the WWF is not real. :D

Come on guys, what else is there for us to watch? Oh I guess we can still follow Felons In Tights (NFL).

There ought to be heat races to qualify for the feature like the midgets.

Three money winners 1st,2nd, and third and bonus money for every lap led. Give the drivers some incentive to race instead riding around waiting for the last ten laps.

Have it like a gunfight, shoot what you bring and race what you are driving. I can see putting a limit on cubic inches but if a mechanic can design something to win go for it. If it works won't be long before others will have it.

sorry ... the drama mongers got the NFL too

Nascar needs to get rid of the restricter plates at Daytona and Talladega and control top speeds by rear-end gearing.
This would get rid of the boring freight-train racing at these two tracks.
This is how NHRA kept the Top-Fuel and Funny Car speeds below 300 mph until tire technology caught up with the speed of the nitro cars.
