Nearly had a heart attack this afternoon

I picked up a box of Remington .25/20 ammunition and noticed the $119.99 price tag. That’s a chunk of change for such a diminutive cartridge with limited uses.

Brownells sent me a "BIG SALE" email today....had to laugh...Their "sale" prices on ammo leaves a lot to be desired..

Prices on all ammo seems to be going up & up! I guess there are a couple of types of ammo that I can still buy cheaper than I can make it.......But the list is getting slimmer.

I paid $57 for a box of Remington 25-20 in 2013. When I checked the price in March of 2022, it had gone up to $128.99. At 1460 fps with an 86 gr. soft point, it's my understanding that it's not even full power. I still have the full box. I inherited the Model 1892 made in 1913 from my Grandfather when he passed in 1973. It had about 18 rounds left in a box of ammo. Knowing Grandpa, that is probably the only box he ever bought for it.

Here is a link to Winchester 25-20 for $65.

The official Remington website has it at $101 per 50. High price, but when is the last time you saw factory ammo for sale, or the next time you'll see it again?

Edit to add: Winchester looks to be a better deal above!

Ya’ll got Cape Buffalo’s, Rino’s and elephants on the loose up there now?

Hey ya never know what might get loose!

Like a lot of guys, I'm a rifle nut and I figure he who dies with the most calibers wins, right?

I figured a Winchester model.70 in .416 rem mag with a Leupold 1.5-5 scope is necessary to keep grizzlys, hippos, and polar bears in check.

And it will probably knock down a deer with less meat damage than a .243.

I reload pretty much all range ammo and since I purchased the components years ago I paid what we here consider normal prices, ($27 for 1,000 primers, $15 for a pound of powder). As long as they are kept in a climate controlled environment, and they are, they will last my lifetime and more. I also purchased the bullet heads in large quantities but those might eventually need to be replenished - just not anytime soon.

The carry ammo and 22RF ammo I have, I bought within the last few years on sale and in bulk so I should be well stocked there as well. Not the good ole' day prices but they were on sale and about the best prices I've seen over the last 5 years. Got enough of that so at least I can sleep at night! lol.

Esoteric calibers like 25acp, 32cp, 38acp and 38 super I very rarely shoot and when I do I only shoot a box or two a year. I bought cases of those many years ago so I am good for a long time. Like I said, the rest I reload.

Keep your eyes peeled for sales from Target Sports and stock up for realistic needs and your comfort zone.

I had a New Haven made model 70 in 416 rem one time. Had a Swarovski PH series scope on it. Nice rifle, looked sharp! It was heavy enough that it wasn’t a lot of fun to carry but recoil was surprisingly mild for such a serious caliber. Also it had a very good factory recoil pad. I’d rather shoot that 416 than a 3” magnum load of out a Mossberg 500. Alas, it went down the road to finance a couple other guns.

Reminds me of when I bought my first gun back in 1979 (I had been using my dad's guns since the early 1960's).

I had picked up a Savage Model 340, 22 Hornet for a killer of a deal. Then I saw the cost of ammo and I understood why the gun was so cheap.

The good thing that came out of it was it started me on a lifetime hobby of reloading my own ammo. And I still have that old Lee Loader I bought back then.

My Deer rifle since the mid-80s here in Penn's Woods is a Ruger International in .243.

I use to buy a 20 rd box or two of ammo when it went "on sale" after deer season ended........ that made a season of maybe shooting 5rds but buying/stocking 20-40. At 70 I'm good for life, maybe even TEOTWAWKI!

:)

I bought a 38-55 a couple of years back. A box of factory ammo, 20 rounds was like $70. I cast my own boolits and reformed 30-30 brass. Cost me <$7 to load 20.

Gotta reload cartridges such as this.
