Laser printers pull a lot more power. My lights dim when mine fires up.
I prefer an ink jet, but regardless of type, get something that feeds paper in as straight a path as possible. The typical HP feeds in a U path that is not conducive to printing labels or perforated stock (business cards, greeting cards).
Depends on your use, but I do a lot of volunteer projects. I replaced an "L" path shape Epson with a "U" path shape HP. The results have been dismal.
