Need a home printer, what do you like?

Laser printers pull a lot more power. My lights dim when mine fires up.

I prefer an ink jet, but regardless of type, get something that feeds paper in as straight a path as possible. The typical HP feeds in a U path that is not conducive to printing labels or perforated stock (business cards, greeting cards).

Depends on your use, but I do a lot of volunteer projects. I replaced an "L" path shape Epson with a "U" path shape HP. The results have been dismal.

I have an HP monochrome laser printer, and have no complaints. I use it for text output, which is crisp and clean, and never smears. And of course, there are no ink jets to clog.

HP Deskjet 1010.

About $35.00 new at Staples.

I've had TWO of them for over a year and use them a lot. They're cheap enough that if they break down ...... throw them away.

I replaced my obsolete Dell 3600 earlier this year with the HP Officejet Pro 8600. It will fax, scan, and print, has duplex printing, and has wireless connection to my home computer network. The ink supplies are reasonable in cost, and I got coupons for free ink cartridges when I bought it at Office Depot. All for around $400.

I have one but it won't maintain the wireless connection. From what I've read on the net, it's a widespread problem.. I've tried the supposed "fix," still doesn't work. No more HP for me.

Epson WF-845 here; had it for 3+ years. Excellent printer; scans reasonably well. So-so as a copier(slow) but if I want speed, the UPS Store near where I work is much better and cost/page is about the same.

If I were to get a printer nite it'd be a Brother laser. Ink jets ink smears if it gets wet. Lasers don't. Plus in the long run it's a lower cost per page.

We have one of these OKI Data MB471w LED Multifunction Printers and could not be happier. Admittedly, it only comes with "starter" toner cartridge, but the regular toner cartridge is inexpensive and lasts a long time.

It sits quietly on the network in a power save mode drawing almost no power and comes to life when you send it a print job. The FAX send and receive functions work well, as does the copy feature that is simple enough that even my wife can use it without help.

Ours is this older model that supports both wired (the way we use it) and wireless connections, but not both at the same time. There are probably newer versions now, not to mention their color version. The electronics are common to all their models, including the heavy duty office models, so they are bullet proof.

Output quality is excellent . . . what's not to love.

We also have a nice Xerox color laser printer, but those are much more expensive to operate. So, it does not get much use. That said, if you can afford it, go for the color laser. The OKI version is nice and even prints banners! They are hard to beat for satisfaction.

Best of luck in your search!
