I love S&W, i own an m&p15 that rocks, but i dont have a handgun of theirs. i know this is a biased place to ask the question, but i am leaning towards an m&p 40, but love springfields XDs as well. My roommate has a sigma, but i dont like how it is just a mock glock... what other smith and wesson autoloading pistols are good for under 600$? i preferably would like to spend 4 or 5 hundred from the good ole tax returns.

I own both M&P 40 & XD 40. You can't go wrong either way. I kinda like the M&P alittle better, but I'm alittle better shot with the XD. Good Luck

robnron getting both is the answer that i thinks best, but my bank account begs to differ! Im going to go to some gun shops tomorrow and check them both out a little further, rough decision.

My XD was much cheaper to buy,(it was a xmas present from my inlaws) but it was bought before the mad rush. I bought the M&P in mid-January for about 550. The XD was 450. The M&P has a much better feel to it IMO, but I like shooting both. Everytime I go to the range they both come out. I can't give any advise on other guns just because I don't have experience with them. IMO if you wind with any of the two, you will have a fine sidearm.

yeah honestly it might come down to price...if one of the shops im going to has one or the other much cheaper than the other im going to get it. Sounds kind of dumb now that i think about it but both look and perform exactly like what i want.
Thanks for the advice guys.

Between the two I would go M&P here is why:

1. American Made! XD made in Croatia
2. M&P has a lower bore axis. This makes recoil much more controllable. My M&P9 FS is the softest shooting pistol I have felt.
3. M&P feels better to most but this is all personal preference.

Now many do not like the M&P trigger. It is useable but could be much better. The APEX kits make a big difference from what I have read or seen. I will be putting one in mine soon. That is an additional cost though.

One other pistol you may want to look at is the Walther PPQ. I have one in 9mm. It is by far THE BEST trigger out of the box of all the striker fired pistols. It does have a higher bore axis so recoil is felt more but it is not terrible. I paid $479.00 for mine last year. I think the prices have gone up a bit since then along with everything else.

Personally, I don't like the way the XD looks. The fact that S&W is made in the USA is even better.

Fixed it for ya. ;)

I had no idea s&W components are made outside USA.

Anyone can assemble. Machining the parts requires the skill.

Do you have a source confirming s&w is technically made outside USA and assembled in America?

I agree that both are good choices.

The fact that S&W is made in the U.S. was a huge factor for me. I don't know about the assembled statement, but for any product to have made in the USA, it has to be made of mostly American products. If it is only assembled in the U.S., it must say so.

On the XD: I don't like the grip safety because you have to grip it a certain way and it is one more thing that could fail.

This has been discussed a few times around here on the forum. Do a little searching the forum and im sure u will be able to find it.

From my gathering its the parts that make up the weapon that are made over seas. Those parts are then shipped here and s&w assemble them into a complete weapon. I dunno the % of the parts that make up the weapon that are made over seas. But i remember the discussion was that some of the parts are made over seas. Since these parts are assembled into a weapon here in the US, its perfectly legal for them to be labeled as "Made in the U.S.A".

For example: FN Herstal is Belguim owned company and a supplier to the US Military. They manufacture some firearms in S. Carolina, but their pistols are marked Fredericksburg, VA, leading you to believe they are Made in America. Depending on the gun, many parts are made overseas and imported to the US for final assembly, so the gun is not truly 100% Made in America.

I don't think you would be ill-served by either the Springfield XDm or the S&W M&P. The people at Springfield are REALLY NICE to deal with if you ever need anything, but S&W has excellent customer service as well. Personally, I guess I would come down on the side of the American made S&W M&P, but I doubt anyone can make a good argument that one is markedly better than the other.

I've never shot a M&P before, so I can't comment on it and never base my opinion off of "looks"... I have owned a Xd9 for the past 4.5 years and haven't had a single lick of trouble w/ it. I paid back then I think $525 out the door and it's a great gun! It's the 4" service and I absolutely love it! I put at least 2000 rounds through it and NOT one issue! It's a little tough to CC in the summer, but I make do... Got a lasered lcp.380 that I bought b/c of the size of the Xd. If they had the sub compact in stock back then, I would have went w/ that.

Any note, good luck w/ your purchase.

I carry a full size XD .40 now but I'm looking to replace it with a M&P Shield .40 asap. I agree the ergonomics aren't as great on the XD, but I put a $10 Hogue grip on mine and it's now very comfortable. If you don't like the Sigma being a mock Glock, you might not like the XD either... Can't remember the name but a now non-existent company modeled it after the Glock and then Springfield bought the design from them. It has a lot of similarities, including the trigger pull/safety and design of the recoil spring (which I love - read up on that). The only reason I bought it over the Glock was a couple added safety features and it's not near as ugly haha. Also, check out the newer XDM's. They are closer to the price of the M&P but have a noticeably better feel. As everyone said, they're all great guns.

I'm sure I'll get beaten down for saying this, but here it goes.

I love my Springfield XDM's I own several & my daily CC for the most part is a XDS & a BG .380. I own a few S&W pistols but none of which are full sized M&P's, but the only M&P I have is a 9mm Shield. I've shot a few in various calibers & they are great pistols IMO & oneday plan on picking one up.

With that said I would never give up my Xdm's or Xds.
Usually at least around here the M&P's can be found at a cheaper price than the Xdm's.

Can't go wromg either way IMO, I recommend trying to rent both or find someone at the range that have both to test out for yourself. Base your decision on how well you shoot w/each & how each feels in your hands.

I handled and liked both the M&P and Xd when I was shopping. It would've been a toss up if not for the fact that the M&P wound up being close to $200 cheaper between the .mil discount and rebate. I also didn't care for the added complexity of the grip safety on the Xd.

I have both. I own an XD 9 service model (4"barrel) and a M&P 9 (4.25'' barrel).

Obviously, if you are price based and wanting it right away, the XD is the gun for you. M&Ps seem to be the 'hot' seller right now , as were the XD's 4-5 years ago. But I think every gun on the counter is a hot seller given the talk on capital hill.

Both guns are reliable, shoot straight, and are overall great guns. I personally like the M&P better. Why? It comes down to the ergonomics of the gun to "my" hand. Which in turn, makes it a better gun for me to shoot and me a better shooter. Yeah, there are features here and there between the two- but in the end it comes down to ergos. And your wallet of course! Lets be honest an HK P30 fits like a glove, but not over my mortgage payment!

Hopefully you've shot both of them or at least handled them both at the gun counter. If the springfield feels good in the hand and you feel comfortable with the grip/trigger/and features. Take it. But if you put the M&P in your hand and it feels at all better, even just a little bit- do yourself a favor and wait a month. Save an extra 100 bucks, and get the M&P.

If you were to put the guns on a comparison chart of their features and builds- the M&P would win. But when its in your hand- its really your personal preference. IMHO its going to, and should, come down to that.
