Local shop has a 98%, beautifully blued 586 in .38 spec.

6" Barrel, Hogue grips marked with S&W logo, Round Butt. Looking around here it seems it might be a Brazilian Contract gun?? My SCSW is at work on my desk so I can't reference it unfortunately.

What's it worth, I don't want to lose my shirt on the deal? In my opinion it hasn't had more than a box of ammo through it. It has a slight line on the cylinder. I have been looking for a 586 everywhere and was hoping for a .357 mag, should I buy this? I want some unbiased answers so I'll hold off saying the price just yet.

Sorry, forgot to add that it comes with nothing other than the gun, unfortunately no box or tools or anything else. Mechanically it is perfect, very tight with no play.

?

Product code 103499 for the 6" barrel. Brazilian export 1994 .38 special.

This would be a $500 to $600 gun here on the left coast. The SCSW lists ANIB $700, EXC $525 VG $350

A .357 would be better, but if the price is right.

Is it marked Mod 586 in the crane?
If not S&W made a model 14 with a full underlug barrel that looks just like a 586 in a K frame.
They are hard to find

A run of 2000 were made in 1991 with the full underlug barrel. Model 14-5.
The model 14 with a full underlug became standard in 1992.

If you're looking for a collector gun, it may be worth the extra $100-200 over a standard 6" 586; but if the seller is asking well over the going rate for a .357 version and/or you just want a gun to shoot, personally I would look for a .357. Now that ammo prices have eased a little, you can even buy 50 rounds and get change from the $200 you'll save ;) . Hope this is helpful.

It was definitely a 586. They are asking under $500. My only issues with it are the grips and that it might be more collectible than a shooter. I think I might hold off until I can find a 686 or 586 in .357 that already has a set of Target grips for the same money.

Just for fun, can anyone tell me what this should have come with for grips when it was new? Also, what ype of box would it have come with?

Thanks

Ian

I would highly recommend holding out for one in .357 it will be worth it! This is my 586. ported & polished with a jeweled hammer & trigger.
used it for outdoor comp. years ago

For what it's worth I would buy it at that price. Then again I am a bit of a 38 special service gun fanatic and it would go with my 681 in 38 special nicely.

Did you check the gun to see if it will chamber a .357? I have a 19 that is marked 38 Special but will chamber a .357. It is my understanding these 19's were a foreign contract overun that were bored out to .357 for sale to the domestic market.

3 Brazil guns!

Here are the 3 586s that are chambered in 38 Spl and shipped to Brazil.

There were 158 of the 2 1/2" guns(product code#103497), 23 of the 4 1/4" guns(product code#103498), and I don't know the quantity of the 6" guns(product code#103499). These were all production overrun guns that were released to the American market.

Mine will NOT chamber a .357 round. I've tried and the magnum round will go in about as far as a .38 would, but not all the way and nowhere near far enough for the cylinder to close.

I've got a 4" an a 6" and shoot them both. But then I'm not really a collector.

Both of these came with the S&W marked Hogue round to square stocks and are marked as 586-4s. I treat them like modern day 38/44s. The Buffalo Bore +P 38 Special 158g SWCHP-GC is my carry ammo of choice and I shoot a handload that duplicates that performance.

For the price listed I would jump on another 6" even though I prefer the 4" and shoot it a lot more than the longer barrel.

That seems like a good price for what it is and how many we're made. If a gun shop, share the location so someone here can buy it. A 38-586 should be a fantastic shooter. Larry
