Need for a high cap CC pistol?

Was in my LGS picking up the latest toy. The owner and an employee were both wearing Smith revolvers. A 357 and a 40 cal. The 40 had 5 rounds in a moon clip with the hammer on an empty chamber. All manner of high cap pistols in the courter displays.

I thoroughly enjoy reading this thread. I find it interesting that caliber and ammunition type or brand has not really entered the discussion. Perhaps being armed with anything is far more important to self defense than one shot stops and penetration in gelatin.

There are any number of real time shooting vids on You Tube, especially on Correia's Armed Self Protection channel. In practically every one, regardless the number of bad guys, armed or not, once the shooting starts, the bad guys head for the tall & uncut. They might return fire while retreating, but I've never seen one where the BG's pressed the attack. Is that a hard & fast rule? Of course not, but it's evidence worth considering.

A retired fire lieutenant and concealed carry holder here lost a confrontation with 3 carjackers last winter. The video is fragmentary, but he fired at least twice and possibly struck one assailant (non-fatally). At which time the suspects started to flee, returning fire. At this point he left the cover of his vehicle and advanced on one of them and at least two of them shot at him, one effectively and fatally. All 3 departed in the last car they had stolen. The victim had a revolver and had rounds left when he was killed. There were 9mm and .40 casings at the scene. I will not comment on his weapon choice or tactics. If he made mistakes, he's paid for them.

Three adults (20, 19 and 18) and a juvenile (15) have been arrested. Two of the adults were out on bond for other violent crimes and one had 3 outstanding warrants. None of them were allowed bond this time.

Recently, there was a man in FL who was in a fast food place. He had a 45 loaded with 7 rounds. A robbery team of 3 came in and started robbing everyone in the place. The man did nothing at first hoping they would do their thing and escape. When they started to put people in the freezer, he decided to fight. He prevailed but emptied his firearm.

When interviewed, they asked him if he was going to do anything different in the future. He said, "Carry more ammo!"

If you carry an autoloader, you should have a spare magazine. Magazines can fail without warning, even a new one.

This is one of the more interesting threads I have seen here lately. When I read the title, the first thing that came to mind was the Beretta 84, a 14-round pistol that isn't that big and suitable for concealed carry. It is also completely dependable and accurate in my (rapidly aging) hands.

I prefer it over the (now sold) J-Frame not because I am expecting human wave attacks, but I simply shoot it better than the little revolver. For me, that is the priority and the bottom line when it comes to firearms.
