I have the opportunity to purchase an early M29 6" Blued TT, TH, TS,. I believe this M29 to be an early production. The cylinder release thumb piece and the retaining screw for it are missing. I contacted S&W and ordered one for it. The new one arrived but would not fit. At a local gun shop I tried two more reportedly from older model S&Ws and they didn't fit either.

I would like to make purchase of the correct part and would appreciate and help you can give me in locating the correct thumb piece and retaining screw.

The M29 I referring to is in the S206XXX serial number range.

Thank you, Sendaro

Any thumbpiece and retaining screw should "fit". It may not be original, but should work. It could be the threads are stripped on the bolt. If so, you will need to replace that too. I have a model 29-2 in the S232,xxx range that shipped in early 1963, if that helps with a date estimate.

Actually, it's a thumbpiece nut, not a screw. The nut is part # 05071, and the correct thumbpiece is part# 03921. These two numbered parts are the same for the blued K,L, and N frames.

Many parts suppliers refer to this as the "old style" thumbpiece.

Found a few here.....but I believe they are used ones:

what dnater said... I have had to fit a few myself, no big deal just a fine file and a little trial and error, more then likely the thumb release is not sitting deep enough through the frame opening.
