Hokay,

You guys saved my *** with the last one so I was hoping to ask for help figuring out this one too. Friend's dad passed and this was in the collection, I didn't want to put it in my FFL book incorrect so I learned its always best to consult you on info!!

on the inside of the frame where the ejector rod goes says
"
41299
7
"

and Serial: S123694

I am guessing he tossed on the aftermarket grips?

As always, TIA!!!!

It is a "Named Model". The model name is "357 Magnum". It became the Model 27 in 1957. What is the question???

You have a Highway Patrolman, the "Pre-Model 28. The grips are aftermarket, as it would have been shipped with Magan or target grips with medallions and a diamond around the screw. The nickel is after market as well, near as I can determine, although others may know better. Shipped between 1954-1955. Nice revolver.

It's either a highway patrolmen or a pre model 27. Looks blued to me and the barrel maybe a 5".

If the top of the gun and barrel rib is checkered then it a pre model 27, pre model 28 the top of the gun will have a smooth finish.

It appears to have a 5"(?) barrel, which would make it a pre-model 27. Is the top strap and barrel rib checkered?

Verified;

5" Barrel
Checkering on the top all the way.

Sorry, I should have said this was to figure out the "model" name.

A "Highway Patrolman" will have that stamped on the barrel. If not there, it is a pre-27 ".357 Magnum." S123694 would likely put shipment around October-November 1954, at least I have some SNs in that neighborhood which did.

S103,000 – S139,999……Late 1954 – Early 1955 (manufacture)

you should log it in as it would have been called in 1954.
"357 Magnum."

In 1954 no one would have been calling it a "pre model 27." In fact, "pre model 27" is not a model at all.

It should be on books as what it *IS*.....
A Smith and Wesson, model 357 Magnum.

The hammer and trigger appear to be flash chromed, not a feature I would associate with a pre 27. If they are flash chromed that and the after market grips will detract from it's value.

Having read through the thread..... OP clarify please........

Does it say "Highway Patrolman" on the side of the barrel?

Blue or Nickel?

hammer and trigger .... case hardened?

Checkered top strap ?

5" barrel?

If it's blue,w/ case hardened trigger and Hammer , with a checkered top strap and 5" barrel....... Sweeeeeet......................

Ship to bam-bam at.................................I'll cover shipping!

This 5" pre-27 serial # S1236XX was shipped October 1954. Put the XX in because I don't remember and it's not in front of me ;)

Looks like a 5 inch post war ".357" Magnum to me.

Definitely NOT a Highway Patrolman.

Grips are after market, ill-fitting, perhaps Jay Scott imitation Stag, or some other such company. Definitely not factory grips.
