I love the idea but when I have dreamed about doing exactly that in the past, I always worry about the limited field of view shooting out a window and having someone walk by when I was shooting. Have you thought bout leaving the garage door there and just opening it up when you want to shoot? They are doing amazing things with air curtains that keep the cold out. Of course you would have to shoot through it or have the barrel stick though it. Just my thoughts but I would love to have the place to do what you are going to do.

Thanks for the idea of keeping the garage door but it hit -37 here last winter. It is going to be framed in and INSULATED so I can stay warm in the winter. I won't be shooting in -37 degrees weather. I will wait until it warms up to 0 or so! lol

Something I see in the mountains, at blind driveways in a curve, is a strategically located convex mirror to eliminate blind spots.
You might consider some 5 gallon buckets with a fence post in them filled with concrete. You could attach the orange plastic construction site fencing to the posts and set them out when you are shooting and this would block anyone from walking by the window. I also love that double sided shooting bench in the above post so you can set things on the other side in easy reach.
For casual shooting, wood is fine, but for long range and ultimate accuracy, such as using a Ransom rest or a rail, I would build it out of welded steel and cement it well into the ground.
A guy could sit there with a cup of coffee in the fall and wait for a goat or a mulie to wander by

When I first shot my 30-06 off a bench I was amazed at the recoil and pain level. Being too bent over, my shoulder was in an awful position to absorb the force. I shot offhand and said, "Hey, that's not so bad." A higher bench for me please.
This is one reason I think that women can take a lot of recoil (after they get over the blast/noise part) because they are strung together much looser than us guys. When I learned how to loosen up, it got better.

The bench 2x12s. Stand up and measure between your wrist and elbow. That is the right distance for you. Get a car wheel and a tractor seat for the stool and make it adjustable. A microwave and a frig you will be in business.

I could use the tractor seat I have. That would be comfortable. I microwave and a small frig and a small flatscreen and I could stay there for days!!

Why don't you build out from the garage door?
That would let you create a dedicated shooting space. You could apply as much sound dampening as you need to insulate the rest of the house from noise (and cut down on what you experience shooting). You would also be able to isolate the garage/gunroom from particulates--enough shooting from inside creates a "soak" environment.
A small bump-out addition or even something more temporary would work fine, even in Montana.
I would also suggest, either way you go, installing some sort of "active range" warning on the outside. Either that or perhaps 10 yards of barrier on either side to prevent someone unexpectedly stepping right in front of your shooting window at an inopportune time.

I will see how the shooting goes from "inside" for now. But I will keep your idea in mind of building out a little for a shooting room.
Well I've been busy with the new place here in Roundup. And I finally got the garage door out and the wall framed and window and door put in. I need to put up some trim to match the rest of the house. The stain/oil finish is the same stuff as on the rest of the place but it sure doesn't look like it right now.

I have been so busy working on the place I haven't taken time to post. Here are a few more pics of the gun room.
This first pic is the west wall that was dry walled. I added the left two outlets.
Second & third pics are the east wall and north wall with the window. I firred the east wall and insulated and dry walled it. It is all painted but I forgot to get pics of that before I headed back to the main house.

I have an air compressor like yours I bought new about 20 years ago. It makes enough water for a garden. Got to drain it every 2 weeks.
