I have a 5906 TSW and realized something strange. When the slide is locked back and the weapon is EMPTY/ NO magazine (also when a LOADED mag is inserted) the slide stop lever does not drop freely when the slide is pulled back (or "sling-shotted").

Any idea what could be the reason the slide stop lever does not drop freely when the slide is pulled back?

I appreciate any advice, sorry if this is covered somewhere, I couldn't find anything searching.

Upon further inspection, I believe the plunger spring in the guide rod may just be weak from time. It appears to be the original guide rod (20 years old). New one is on order, will report when installed. Please feel free to submit your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

The guiderod plunger & spring only serves to prevent the slide stop from walking out to the left.

The first thing I would check is the state of the plunger spring which is housed in the slide stop itself. Were the wrong spring installed there or... the correct spring became rusted or gummed up with old oxidized oil, that would create the problem you're reporting.

When the magazine follower is not pushing upwards on the slide stop... That plunger & spring housed in the slide stop acts against the angled surface of the sideplate to push the slide stop down out of engagement with the slide's stop notch.

I'd suggest pulling that slide stop and soak it in penetrating oil such as Kroil or PB-Blaster (NOT WD-40)for a hour or so. Then exercise the plunger a bunch to loosen it up.

If that doesn't cure the problem then we'd need to look at the possibility you may have an incompatible part number there either the entire slide stop assembly or only the plunger or the plunger spring

Cheers

Roger all, thanks for the information sir.

Did the PB soak, no luck.

Being that the 5906TSW uses a different frame than a regular 5906, would this part work?

"Smith & Wesson Slide Stop Assembly S&W 4003TSW, 4006TSW, 4013TSW, 4043TSW, 4046TSW, 4004, 411"

The 5906TSW is built on a 4006TSW frame. So I don't see the issue, although I could be ignorant or missing something. Can you elaborate further than "Do not use a part for a different model in that 5906."?

Something you might check...

Pull the grips and look at the lower legs of the sideplate where they clip around the grooved end of the sear pin.

If they are tweaked or spread, it could result in the mispositioning of the sideplate's upper leg where it postions the slide stop.

No sir. If I push it up, it stays up, even with no mag. I think the spring in the slide stop lever may be extremely weak or compromised. I may try to polish the thicker part of the lever that goes into the frame last, it looks like there is some excess paint on it.

Yes sir. stay's where ever I put it. Even further up than it would go with the slide installed and the plunger almost fully depressed.

Now it's time to figure out WHERE it's binding.

Is the shaft binding in the frame holes or is the lever binding against the frame?

John?

It is fine until this "drum" goes in. Obviously I won't do anything to the frame, but I believe this part has excess paint on it that could be "polished" off.

It shouldn't be "painted", but rather it is a chemically "blackened" stainless part.

Regardless, go ahead and smooth it with a little emery paper.

It should pivot easily and smoothly.

John

The slide stop should rotate freely through nearly 180° in the frame. And the lever portion should not rub on or contact the frame flat at all.

A defective part is not unheard of and those things can at times get bent is such a way to cause problems

Gentlemen, we're back in business!

After filing down an ugly spot and some patient emery work, she works great, very positive snap downward when pulling back the slide. Thank you all for your help!

I'm happy to be of service, if indeed I helped, as you seem to have correctly diagnosed the problem yourself as evidenced by your statements in your posts #10 and #15.

Good job!!!

John
