Hi, I have a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 that came with the flash hider/supressor at the end of the threaded barrel. I want to be able to remove my barrel and tighten the nut but the plastic end cap on the hand guard rail cannot slide off the barrel without the flash hider removed. This has been stopping me from removing the barrel and I want to get back into action with my M&P15-22. Any of you have this problem before? And if so, how did you handle it? Thank you. I am also looking to see if possibly a gunsmith in the Portland/Gresham area (in Oregon) can help me with this. However, I would prefer any advice from you S&W forum members. I have posted threads about this in my local firearm forum and even on a different Smith & Wesson forum. Though i've been asking for some time, noone has been able to help me. If anyone here can provide any info on how to remove it, I would gladly appreciate it!

Thanks, I checked out the video. I don't think the 15-22 has the pin holding in the flash hider. I'll double check again when I get home. Thank you for your help though.

Yes and it may have been locktighted or some other thing. The main thing is, you should be able to torque it off. Perhaps a compliant model for restrictive states is affixed differently but a normal one should screw off. Good luck with it. :)

just tap it with a rubber mallet, but put a towel over the barrel first to prevent scratches and etc.

Tried all everything... I bought it brand new and it seems like i'm the only one with this problem? I don't know...

Might be a good idea to take it to a GOOD local gunsmith. My experience has been they charge very little or even for good will on something simple like that. My guess is you aren't applying enough force BUT why chance damage to the bbl.? A proper vice and technique may make it much easier.

maybe im misunderstanding but if all you want is to take off the handgaurds, you DONT HAVE TO REMOVE THE FLASH HIDER.

the hangaurds get pulled towards the reciever and pulled out of the cup by the f.h. there is a spring loaded area by the reciever the handgaurds fit in, pull that back towards reciever.

they sell a tool but i can do it without the $30 tool.

its very easy. let me know if you still cant figure it out. if its a standard handgaurd its gonna be in 2 pieces, a top and bottom. just put the butt stock on the ground, barrel up, pull down on the handgaurd holder by the reciever, it will then release the handguards. just look up handgaurd removal on utube better yet. its hard to put it in text.

it takes like 3 seconds. dont mess with the flash hider.

True for the M&P15, not so for the 15-22.

On the 15-22, the rails are one piece. There is an end-cap that clips into them. You cannot remove the rails without (1)removing the flash hider, (2) remove the end cap by un-clipping it from the hand guard/rails, and (3) removing the barrel nut using a tool that is specific to the 15-22. To remove the f/h, you need to clamp the barrel using barrel vise inserts to keep from torqueing the upper receiver and breaking it.

You can use whatever you want to keep the barrel from turning but dedicated vise jaws make it much easier and safer to boot.

You might post in the 15-22 sub forum for other responses.

Though this thread is in the Long Guns forum (and two or three others last I saw), he has a 15-22, not an M&P 15.

Yeah i see, my bad.

i didnt know that about the 22 though, thought they were the same thing, just different bolt and mag, and not gas but spring. thats how my mp15-22 pistol is anyways.

oh well sorry. thanks for the info.

btw thats a crappy design.

A crappy design? You try designing an .22 caliber AR-15 clone that costs under $500 and offers all the features that the 15-22 does. When you do, get back to us.
