I am a Director of my military unit Association. We have decided to hold our 2013 reunion in St. Louis. What areas are best and what areas should we avoid in our selection of hotels?? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks in advance.

The parts inside city limits...

Well, it's not really that bad...yet. Although I would stay south of Delmar and west of Kingshighway Blvd. The farther east and north you go the worse it gets. If I have to go there for some reason that I can't get out of, I carry two spare mags, total of 42 rounds on me. It gets worse every day, there's kids playing the "Knockout King" game, beat a man down and put him in the hospital for no reason, they had to let the kids go as the one witness was terrorized into not testifying. Drive-by shootings are an everyday occurrence it seems, as are shootings. I would say do as much as you can in the south-west area of the city, or western sections although they also have bad areas. Check out the crime mapping at crimereports.com, that will give you a good overview of the trouble spots.

Well stated. If you can avoid the city itself, and stay in the County instead, you'll have much better odds of not becoming a victim. The city and its many attractions are fine during the day, but at night some areas are pretty scary, most notably the North side, and parts of the South side as well. Midtown and downtown are generally safer, and offer lots of options for hotels and restaurants.

The airport (Lambert) is located in the northern end of the county, which can also be a bit risky, the only way to avoid the high-crime areas is to go west and a bit south. How big a group are you talking about?

What is the site for the reunion? Guessing downtown St. Louis. Downtown St. Louis is usually safe during the day and evening if you are in the normal business and tourist areas, and in groups. I wouldn't go north of the convention center on Washington Avenue, or over to the east side in Illinois, or go wandering around by myself in isolated spots at night.

Hotels that I have a good opinion of downtown, no order.

Just some thoughts. Best areas imho would be downtown St. Louis or Clayton (Ritz-Carlton).

Good advice on -no mans land-

Yep-I worked at Union and Delmar-one block NE and you have gone too far. I'm now in central MO-but we go to St. Louis on occassion-I don't mind staying down town-Situational Awareness, Armed-key factors. If we get lost and drive into East St. Louis-I go to alert condition-and we get out of there-
