Need some information

I will give my opinion, and its just one mans opinion...

Today I am set up with a Dillon 650, case feed, bullet feed and a primer filler. I can load 100 rounds of forty or nine in three or four mins max. Yes, I have a substantial investment in equipment. I also do shotgun on a Dillon SL900...

Like a lot of things in life its time and money. At this moment in time (could change tomorrow) I have more money than time.

If you have even more money, that dillon 1050 seems very nice...

There is no real right answer, it just depends on you.

Youtube has lots of video on all sorts of presses and set ups. Look and see whats involved.

I will not mind spending $3000 on a reloading set up. While money is not flowing out of my front door, I have a fair sized income, two retirement checks and a little spare money coming in from other sources. There are times I am flat broke and times I am flush with money but I usually can afford what I want at the time I want it.

Not sure if the $3000 would be realistic but I would be likely abandoning the idea if it ran much more than that initially.

Hey Oldman45, your right, with a bum shoulder you dont need repitition! As I use a seperate crimp die on most handgun caliber's I have to pull the handle two hundred time's per box of fifty. With a progressive it's only fifty time's per 50. Your choice makes a lot of sence in this instance! Dillon make's a fine piece of equipment, my Square Deal B has lasted a lot of year's and a lot of rounds with no problem's. Good luck with your new hobby, and if you ever need help or have a question feel free to PM me with your phone number and I will call, I have a call anywhere phone plan so it wont cost me.

Id guess for half of your budget you can have a beautiful reloading set up that most would be envious of.

Heres a start

Dillon Square deal $365.00 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Dillon Conversion kit $81.95 X2 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Dillon tool head $29.95 x 2 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Dillon Scale $139.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

OR

Dillon Scale $54.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Dillon case cleaner $139.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Dillon Separator $44.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Caliper $39.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Corn Cob $13.95 Dillon Precision: Reloaders, Reloading Equipment, Bullet Reloading, Bullet Reloaders

Add in another $200-$300 for a Dillon Wrench, Primer Flip tray and more tubes. A good reloading book, Lyman? I am sure you will want a few other goodies as well. Perhaps a cover? and a bottle of car polish like New Finish for the tumbler.

This list is $1267.55 this would do three pistol calibers. You can save some money on this by buying a Midway tumbler and separator. The caliper can be had for less as well. These machines dont lose much value. As the list prices increase so do the used prices.

You could spend more on bigger and better machines, but this is a good starting point I think. If you want to get in deeper in the future you can sell this and move up. All the accessories you can have for near ever no matter what press you have.

No I dont get a commission from Dillon :)

<edit>
Sorry for any confusion, I am not selling ANY thing. All the items I listed above are new from Dillon. You can get them from many other sources. I made this list for a comparison and for conversation purposes only. I have no affiliation with Dillon Precision or any sellers or its products, other that a satisfied customer.

What kind of Dillon do you have sitting around? Is it for sale? I'm almost afraid to post anything on this site since I'm new and really don't understand what I can do and can't do. I'm having a very hard time navigating around. I guess when you get old like me things just go to ******. Is there a place on here where one can buy and sell guns?
THANKS.....................CookE

If you are really interested in getting into reloading I have a Dillon 1050 like new that I would consider selling. If interested drop me a line...................CookE

There is indeed a section toward the bottom of the page where you can buy and sell guns, accessories, and advertise for items wanted. (three separate categories)
A moderator will probably move your last post to the proper location.

This is indeed the place to be for information. I have received many PMs, a few emails and some verbal communication on this from a fellow member in GA by phone. He and I will be talking more in days to come and he was most helpful in explaining the reloading process discussing each step.

Another reloader in my state has graciously offered me a first hand look at the reloading process in his work room. I plan on making a trip there to see this in the near future.

My thanks to all that have replied here, in messages, emails and by phone. You have given me a lot to think about, some things to consider and even made me now have other questions.

Right now, I want to know if there is some type of license required when one is reloading for their own use. I doubt there would be unless a person plans on selling ammo publically. Even that could be looked at in various light. I know as a pilot, I cannot charge people to fly them anywhere without being licensed as a pilot for hire with a commercial rating but I can fly someone anywhere they want to go as long as they pay the expenses or we share expenses for a mutual need trip. In reloading, I can see where charging just for the supplies might not require a license but that is not my intent although I know people area always asking friends to do things for which they have special skills but my interest is not toward supplying friends with ammo to practice with.

No license required to load/reload for your own use. An 06FFL (IIRC) is required to manufacture ammo for sales.
