My wife (also older than me, but she doesn't look it) just turned 50 a week and a half ago: I took her to HI for a week at a nice place. And made a fuss over her the entire time - flowers (leis), jewelry (a ring and a bracelet - stopped by Tiffany's after taking her out for her birthday breakfast at a French restaurant that was just too cutesy for words), fancy sunglasses and pocketbook, frou-frou restaurants, some interesting restaurants that were different, "high tea", music, etc. Seemed to work and was a lot of fun.
She wasn't thrilled about turning 50, but it went all right. It's nice that you're thinking about this so much: it's one of those milestone things that can be made a lot nicer by some thoughtful attention. Good show, amigo, by making the effort - I think that's what matters most.
