Howdy neighbor.

I have a Model 58 that I carried as a duty sidearm for 13 years.

It has no finish on the back strap very similar to your gun.

I often found myself resting my hand on the backstrap during traffic stops and interactions with people with whom I came in contact.

I didn't grip the gun, just rested the heel of my hand on the gun in a casual manner.

I still find myself doing that, even after being away from LE for 35 years.

I bet that more than once you subconsciously touched the grips or backstrap of your revolver just to make sure it was still there.

Thank you everyone for your input.
I inspected it closer and it does look like it has been refinished.
The owner wants keep it, for now, because of it's sentimental value.
He will be conducting some research on how it ended up in Wyoming (none of his relatives were LEOs, that he knows of).
