New 422

Just picked up a new to me S&W 422. Don't know a whole lot about these. Any info ya all can share would be greatly appreciated.

Id say its about 85% to 90% and seems to function great. Haven't shot it yet. Will follow up with a range report when I do.

Not really sure what these go go exactly but I got it for $279 otd. No box and 1 mag... Did I do ok on the price?

Also anybody know where to get mags for a reasonable price and maybe a owners manual?

I picked up a 4" version with wood grip a month ago for $315 OTD. I think I overpaid by about $50 after doing some research. I think you paid a fair price for a 6" version.

Great shooter, very accurate.

I bought some mags direct from S&W for ~$30/each, so no such thing as "cheap" mags for this gun. It uses the same mag as the Model 41 and a few other S&W .22s

Well finally made it to the range today. All i can say is wow this thing has a great trigger. Shot great at 7 yards but was way high at 25 yards. Might have to look into a red dot for it. Over all I am really happy. Totally blows my p22 outa the water for accuracy and function.

Did have one issue though... Doesn't want to lock the slide open on the last round. Used a old mag and a brand new mag same problem. Any ideas?

You did well.
Many years ago I went to my local shop to buy a Ruger MarkII. The only one he dad was a 6 inch stainless...I wanted the 4 inch standard barrel. The owner was a S&W guy and pointed me toward the 422...I balked at first...but I left with it.
Mine is so accurate it's boring...it will never leave my posession.

Funny...my slide won't lock back occasionally either. I talked to Smith, they seemed to think it is my mag springs...maybe so...I haven't done anything about it yet.

I love those things. I have had several over the years, currently have a 4 inch 422, a 6 inch 622, and one of each in the all steel 2206.

The 6 inch 622 is my favorite and the most accurate of the bunch. Its also the perfect handgun to teach kids and ladies to shoot.

They make a great suppressor host. HOTROD over on rimfire central makes an adapter, and because of the low bore axis the can doesn't get in the way of the sights.

I have a couple of these and really like them. S&W no longer carries parts for this series. Firing pins replacement is an issue right now untill someone reproduces them for a reasonable price. The one thing you don't want to do is dry fire it. Take down is a little tricky the first time you do it. The last shot hold open could be a lubrication issue.

I picked up a 2206 for my son to learn on when he gets old enough. Dry firing is a big no-no for these guns for the firing pin issue mentione above. Magazine for the guns can be found through MidwayUSA for a little over $20. Worst part about them is the dry fire issue and no decocker. Because if you are like me, and everyone you show it to racks the slide to check the chamber, and cocks the gun. There is an indicator on the bottom of the gun near the mag-well that will let you know the gun is cocked. To decock the gun save a couple of spent shell casings, and insert one in the chamber and then pull the trigger. Some people say their 422/622/2206/2213/2214's fire anything you feed them, my 2206 prefers plated cone shaped bullets. Otherwise I get some feeding issues. So I have been shooting CCI Mini-Mags with pretty good success.

Bought a 2206 in the early 90's when they first came out, 1000's of rounds since with no problems.

I've owned and shot a 622 for about 15 years now. It has always worked well, but I shoot high thumbs and I tend to block the ejection port, forcing the empty back into the action and jamming it up. My problem, not the pistol's.

One thing to check - under the left side grip (I think), there are several small flathead screws that hold the sideplate on. I would suggest you check them for tightness before shooting. Mine worked loose without me knowing it and I lost a couple of them.

I love my 422, I picked it up about a month ago for $250 OTD. It is very reliable and works with all the ammo that I've tried. I don't think they still have the manual on the website, but if you call customer service they'll send you one for free! 422 stove pipes

I picked up a 422 15 years ago. I have not used it a lot but its a beautiful piece of iron. It has always been real picky on what I feed it and recently started stove piping every shot. I completely disassemble this thig, which is no easy task, and cleaned everything spic and span and relubed. This did not help. After reading much about it I replaced the recoil spring and ejector which seemed to improve it for a minute. I got off three rounds before another stove pipe and now its back to every round. I have been using CCI stingers in it exclusively since for the last 5 years with only one stove per clip. Called S&W helpline and they said to try different ammo. I DID AND IT STILL PIPES ON ME ALMOST EVERY ROUND. I bought 2 new mags for it and that doesn't help either. Any suggestions?

Is the Ejector you replaced an original S&W
Ejector Part? All springs in place?

Also is the Magazine Release Ok. How worn
is the edge that engages the Magazine?

My Son's had similar problems and I replaced
both with only original S&W parts, all is well now.

My Son was limp wristing it also I noticed, he was
not use to shooting Auto's back in the day. I see
though you have been shooting for a lot longer.

As everyone above has already mentioned - these are fantastic pistols! I bought a 622 on my 21st birthday many years ago. Man I loved that store too -long gone...I believe it was called Accuracy Gun Shop or similar - alway full of old gun guys hanging out talking shop. Anyway, they are very accurate, reliable with almost every round out there and just feel so good in the hand. I picked up a 422 from a pawn shop about 10 years ago for $200, just because I suppose. I then discovered, as mentioned above, that they make perfect suppressor hosts! The lower barrel to sight axis is perfect for that setup. I picked up a spare firing pin/spring from Numrich long ago and have them stored just in case, but both guns are still running strong. Get a stack of the magazines, don't leave them loaded and they should last you a long time. I'm still using the original mags from 24 years ago. I use a toothbrush and a rag to wipe them off every so often. They make both 10 and 12 round versions - both work well - I prefer the 12rd versions just because. Welcome to the 422/622 family!

There is an extractor on the slide, and the "ejector" is on the slide lock lever.

I'll assume you replaced the extractor.

But first give me the explanation of what you consider a stove pipe. A picture would be best. Have you tried loading a round, removing the mag, and cycling the round out by hand to see if it works OK? Snap caps would be best obviously, if you use live rounds please use all precautions. Once you've tried one, then try hand cycling through several rounds. Fast and slow, watching what happens.

Beyond that it's very typical for the barrel nut to become loose on these and cause a number of issues. Have you checked/tightened the barrel nut?

Take some pics of the pistol and post them up here, maybe we can spot something...
