I have been noticing some interesting 5946 pistols on GB lately and have not seen any discussion here yet. It looks as though these are new production 5946 pistols with the NYPD mag safety decact warning. Made in Houlton, has the same serial number on the left of the frame as the WVSP 4566TSW pistols. Did anyone pick one up. I'm on the fence as I already have a reg. 5946 (one of the two non TSW pistols I possess). If you have one or know a place where they can be had for not $500 dollars I would like to know :) one in the auction has 2014 dated Novak sights as well.

I bought one from the Forum . I got the box and all , even a NYPD patch , it was the members carry gun . On the sticker it actually states it's a NYPD gun . It's a little rough , hell the guy carried it for a while by the looks but I don't care . If it talked , I am sure it would have some stories .

What were the markings on the test gun? I just picked up a 5946 made in Houlton. Box lists SKU as 149332 which I cannot find in SCSW and a milled out area on the right side of the frame with serial number UCUXXXX. No other serial number. Night sights. No mag safety, no double strike.

Thoughts???

I lucked into an NYPD 5946 a couple weeks ago, turns out it was a test gun from the trial run.

My test gun was marked SW followed by a 4 digit number, I've spoken with to NYPD officers who were part of the trials. Both are members here, maybe they'll chime in.

As far as I know all the test guns were from 1993, so this probably isn't one of those. It very probably is a retired Leo gun.

I was a part of the 1993 NYPD's "test gun" program. The NYPD was in the process of evaluating 9MM weapons to switch over to from the 38's we carried. 2 officers from each precinct were picked to take part. I was picked from the 114 ( Astoria Queens ) based on my time, 9 years and plus I had a military (USMC) background. 3 different weapons were offered. S&W5946, Glock (don't remember the model). I'm fuzzy on the 3rd. Always thought it was an H&K model but another officer, who is still active and works at the range said it was a Ruger. Anyway, my 5946 has "SW0151" lazered into the frame. All 1993 "test guns" had one of these markings. We weren't allowed to fire any of them prior to picking one. We could pick them up and handle them but that was it. The 5946 is stainless, the other 2 black. I liked the looks of the stainless so that's why I picked it. All had the NY trigger. DAO, no safety. Trigger pull 12 lbs. To this day, I still can't get decent groups with it!! LOL.
It still resides in my safe alongside my 38's I started out with in 1984. I'll never part with any of those.

Is it possible to convert these to DA/SA like a 5906?
Not really. The DAO receiver and slide are longer at the aft end of the pistol. Putting a DA/SA top end on one of these longer receivers results in a horrible looking mismatch. Considering the cost of such a conversion, it's better to just buy or trade for a 5906.
