New 617 10-shot?

Only up grade for me was to paint the front sight and a really good cleaning. So far it likes everything I shot through it.

I sold mine in a weak moment and have been kicking myself ever since. The lock is a non-issue in my book. If it offends you, get it plugged.

I Love my 617-6 with the 6" barrel. I did have to send mine back because it was spitting lead. S&W had it back to me quickly. Great shooter now. My oldest daughter has already claimed it on my passing she likes shooting it so much.
How long ago was this and how long did it take smith to get it back in your hands?
Last month I bought a new 617 4" and it spits lead too. I just sent it back last week. A friend bought one the week before from a different gun store. His shot all over the place. After running a brush through it most of the rifling fell out in pieces. We're both curious as to what we'll get back and how long it will take.

I'm not into stainless or newer model guns but I had a 617-6 , 4" 10 shot I took on trade. Gun was mint condition and I shoot a box just for grins. As far as I could tell with plinking at random targets it was as good as m17s.
Didn't put it on paper but I wouldn't be afraid to buy one expecting top shelf accuracy. The keyhole is non issue to me because my interest stops at blue P&R era S&Ws.

I just bought this used 617-4 Pre-lock 6 inch barrel 22 LR two days ago. It came with a 80 round loading block and two DS speed loaders. It has a scope already mounted. And it had these very nice wood grips on it. I did not need it... but it was a 617-4 Pre-lock with all the goodies and I couldn't pass on it for $500 bucks out the door. Why would someone dress out this fine 617-4 with all the goodies and sell it? Bless his heart.

Note to self: Never go into a gun store, again.

You should go to church after stealing that gun.

I used to own a pre-lock 10 shot 617. Wonderful gun. My oldest son has it now. As I get more mature, I've "gifted" a number of my guns to my sons. My 617s was two of them. I also owned a 6 shot pre-lock 617. My other son has that one. Every 617 I've ever shot was pure joy to shoot.

I alternate a 617-10 6" with a 686-7 6" at the range...saves some on ammo costs for a retiree. I have put many thousands of rounds through each with no problems at all. The 22 cal is much kinder than the 38spl but the feel, weight, sighting of both are similar. I put a touch of white nail polish on the 617 sight to help shoot at targets with a black bullseye.

Bit the bullet, picked up my new 617-6 4" today. Speedbeez loader and blocks on the way. Should be ready for the range later this week.

P.S. Haven't done a complete inspection but I did notice the trigger is dis-colored and looks like it just came out of the MIM mold. Common?

I had another thought about my 617-6"...when I first started to use it (I'm a cleaning nut and do so after each shooting) I began to lose accuracy with all ammo, ultimately noting key-holing on paper targets. I was a "new" shooter at this time...learning lessons as I became more experienced. This happened despite cleaning after each use. I was ready to mail it back for exam/repair, but called first and spoke to someone...actually the first person answering the call. I told him my problem and how frustrated I was since I never left the gun "dirty" more than 24 hours. He asked me what my cleaning process involved. I used swabs on 22 cal jags, Hoppe's #9, and ran the last swab with a drop of gun oil, then stored it in a small safe but ALWAYS in the same position. The S&W guy said that the oil was probably drying out on the same side of the barrel, so thick that it was asymmetrically retarding the passage of the bullet and it's twist. This didn't happen to my 686 because the amount of oil was minimal in the larger diameter bore, more powerful discharge, etc. He suggested use of gun cleaner on jags alternating with a brass 22 cal brush...10x a night for a week, then try shooting it again. Also to store the 617 without oil in a dry environment and only with barrel oil if I wasn't going to shoot for an extended period. Well, I never had a problem after this, and have put >12,000 rounds through it. Due to obvious cost/fun issues, it is my favorite range gun now for 9 years! I still clean it after every use!

My 617-6 4 inch was my first revolver and have about 2500 flawless round through it. Yes, it has the lock but I don't care as this is mostly a recreational/range gun.

I have about 800 rounds through it since its last cleaning and it still shoots great. I'm afraid if I clean it up I won't take it to the range as I won't want to get it dirty!

Quite frankly, shooting this gun almost get boring after a while as it performs so well but if you want to show off at the range, this is your piece!

Yes, all 3 of my MIM revolvers have the "discolored" trigger and hammer.

Top to bottom
60-15 3 inch with Pro Grips
686-15 Plus 4 inch with Nill Grips
617-6 4 inch with Nill Grips

My 617-6 is one of my favorite K Frames, and it has thousands of rounds through it. Federal Bulk Pack ammo is going to be the cleanest ammo to use. Stay away from Remington Golden Bullets. That stuff is dirty.

The trigger and hammer appear to be case hardened.

First plinking report, down on the family farm, in the woods, around the pond... this thing will put a smile on your face. Action is very smooth for out of the box. More accurate than I am. I have a "number" of .22 handguns and all are fun but, the 617 takes the prize for most enjoyable.

I bought a new 617 4" recently and had to wear it in. It carried up too early.

It's a great shooter now and has caused the demise of many snappers.
