I'm confused. You said it won't budge but not all the time. Is that to mean it is sticking pretty stiffly but you eventually get it to go? It might need a good cleaning if there is some sticky film on the rod of it from shipping. But I've never really heard of that before. I wonder if the star is getting hung up on the cylinder by a burr or something.

What ammo are you using?

I think I remember reading of someone else with that issue, and the ammo was the problem.

IMHO, NO BRAND OF FACTORY AMMO SHOULD CAUSE THIS. BUBBA'S RELOADS ARE QUESTIONABLE......

I WOULD REMOVE THE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY, AND GIVE ALL THE COMPONENTS A THOROUGH CLEANING AND LIGHT LUBE......

IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, I WOULD RETURN IT TO THE MOTHERSHIP...

Steel-cased factory ammo definitely will be hard/next-to-impossible to manually extract. Just an fyi. OP didn't answer what type of ammo was being used.

Post#5 said no brand of factory ammo should cause this failure to extract, which isn't absolutely true.

WRONG....

I have a 642 and certain brands DO stick. Brands such as Monarch sold at the Academy, Aguila 38 special for example will experience primers backing out on occasion causing the cylinder to lock up and expanding brass causing difficulties with extraction. Steel case ammo is next to worthless in some guns. So questioning about which ammo was being used is a valid question...
