New 642's without lock

a lockless 642 is on the way to join its lockless and lockborn siblings.....for carry, it is lockless....for range, it does not matter

where are you getting it from, I might want to give them a call also. thanks.
I got mine from Tom Ball Pawn and Jewelry. They are always worth checking into when shopping for a gun. They ordered mine plus one more, so I bought both of them yesterday. If this is indeed a parts clearing by S&W, I wanted to have an extra one. I wish I had done the same when I bought my 940 back in 1997.

Thanks for the tip, just bought mine this morning from them, very nice people and very nice prices. thanks again!

I found one today. I traded a 1911 9mm frankengun I never use as I didn't want to melt the credit any further. My guy had two for $399 each. I bought one and another customer saw it in my hand and bought the other. I haven't searched the whole thread but my dealer said they are an overun for olice depts. Is that true?

I like the serial number prefix on the early new 642-1, DCMxxxx. Wonder if "DCM" will last thru the entire production run. On the way to me for $430 + $12 ship + $25 FFL transfer. I'm a happy guy, thought I had bought my last gun.

FINALLY! I got mine today! Couldn't be happier!

Mines also a DCM prefix (Department of Civilian Marksmanship!

).

Top Gun Supply's web site says they have another shipment coming in on Monday, 7/28

That is true what DWS says. I got their last one Friday morning and it is on the way hee, hee, hee.
Michele said they were getting more Monday. So give them a shout-out.

Regards from down in Tex.

I picked one up today at FBMG in Draper, UT. They had 2 more of them, but the owner mentioned them on his blog, and I'll bet they're both gone. I'm glad I got one. I think it's going to be my main carry gun.

I just got mine today. It has a DCN00xx s/n. Nice looking gun. The trigger has quite a hitch in it at the end, but it should smooth out with use. Nice finish and fit. Going to shoot it tomorrow, with luck it'll shoot as good as it looks.

I noticed that also while dry firing, I'm taking it to the range sunday for a little break-in.

I Picked mine up Friday evening. Looked it over good and the finish on it was perfet. The shell envelope says it was test fired on 7/15/08. Put a few rounds through it today. I have since put a set of Spegal wood grips on it and I'm carrying it in an old Thad Rybka pocket holster I had laying around. I'm keeping my older non lock 642 in the glove box as a car gun.

"The inflated value of all those revolvers sitting there is due largely to the fact that S&W isn't making them without locks anymore."

Uh...no, not necessarily. There are the obvious changes to inferior materials and barrel design which discourage fans of "true" S&W revolvers produced decades ago.

Many of us refuse to purchase a current-production S&W revolver with zit and inferior internals when a superior, older product is available at a lesser price.

I'm hoping that this release of somewhat-original 642s is a test...rewarding us consumers in the future with add'l models unencumbered with Clinton-era paraphenalia.

If the true production run is 4,000 units through one distributor, buy now!

For folks still looking for a 642-1, I just ordered one from DB Flanagans Gun Shop in MS for $394 shipped. She seemed to think the distributor still had "plenty". E-mail at [email protected]. I have no affiliation with them, but the SigForum members think highly of her.

For information, I e-mailed S & W to thank them for making these Non IL revolvers and encouraged them to do more of this. Here is the response I got back:

Hi,
The run of the Model 642 was only a limited run. We had some frames
that were in our inventory that were the old style. We will continue to
put the internal lock on all of our revolver line. We thank you for your comments
concerning the special run.

Thank you
Kf

Top Gun has them is stock too but of course you will have to have it sent to your FFL. The price is $419.95 + $18 S&H. I got mine from RSR Group and it was one of the original 700 delivered last Tuesday which were sold out the day they arrived. They had an additional 1,100 delivered last Friday so I'm sure they are still some available.
I got my M642-1 last week and forget to post the pictures so here it is...

There are two or three sellers in the classified section selling these at good prices.

Okay, I decided I didn't want to kick myself later for missing the opportunity to add a second 642-1 to my working collection, so I ordered one.

Might as well have a spare non-ILS Airweight Centennial. If nothing else, it can remain in the safe with the DAO 37-2 Airweight I picked up when that canceled overseas order hit the commercial market.

Being able to pick up another non-ILS 642 means the nickeled model 40 Centennial moves further down on my list.

That means I might actually add a second M&P pistol to my collection, either a .40 or .45 compact, since my M&P 45 Dark Earth has demonstrated itself to be a surprisingly excellent pistol.

I wish S&W would find some older non-ILS 638 or 686+ frames they want to clear out as special production runs, though.

My new 642-1 means I can retire my now expensive to replace 940 to the safe. I think the 9mm ammo is more effective, but then again shot placement is everything (with expension and penetration using up what is left

). I would hate to have my 940 disappear for an extended amount of time to the cops if Lord forbid I had to ever use it.
