The Iowa Legislature just passed a new gun law. Among other things it legalizes suppressors. It passed unanimously. I don't have any suppressors, but that's kinda cool.
The law that surprised me is it is now legal for parents to teach their young children to shoot a handgun under their supervision. I had no idea that was illegal. My Dad and Grampa taught me to shoot when I was just a sprout, and I taught my kids too. Guess we were dirty rotten criminals.

Yeah... When we were kids, our Dad would take us down to the dump for an old fashioned 'Rat Shoot'.
It truly was a Simpler Time. :)

Probably something to clarify that what parents have been doing for years is acceptable; and to keep it from being a problem in a divorce; and to keep a rabid social services administration out of the picture.

We taught the kids not to push silverware or paper clips into the electric outlets. We taught the kids how to safely use the kitchen stove. We taught the kids how to safely use the fireplace. We taught the kids how furnaces and water heaters work. We taught the kids how to use a lawn mower and other tools. We taught the kids how to safely drive an automobile. We taught the kids how to safely and properly handle firearms.

There are a lot of things youngsters need to learn in order to survive and thrive in the world. That is what parents are there for.

+1 The best laws are those that protect rights.

I missed that little bit of news. Guess I didn't read the weekly updates I get from Des Moines!!!

I wrote to all of my state legislators about the suppressors even though I don't plan on getting any. Other people should be able to buy them if they wish.

Wish the federal government would back off on them!

I forgot about this thread. My dementia is in full bloom.
The law about making it legal to teach kids to shoot surpised everybody. I have a friend I know from the YMCA who is a Democrat member of the legislature. I asked him about this and he laughed and said he didn't know about the law either. Said his Dad taught him to shoot when he was a kid too.

I don't think that bill ever made it to the Gov's desk. Or did I miss it?
