After having decided to dump the plan of getting a .223/.556 I went ahead and got the 15-22 yesterday. It was actually a choice between the Colt and the SW but decided to go the SW way after reading and watching all the reviews.

Now I need some advice/info on the ff.:
1. Muzzle Brake (model I got didn't have one). I saw one
from True Shot Technologies that attaches via 3 set
screws. How reliable is it being screwed down and not
threaded? Anybody here ever used one?
2. Red Dot sights. What brand and model is a good one for a
fairly reasonable price? Which store?
3. One point sling. What is a good brand and where available?
4. Rail covers. What is a good brand and where available?

Thanks

Ernie

I'm new to the 15-22 myself, but here's what I found:

The Burris Fastfire III appears to be a resilient, reliable reflex style sight. It's small, especially when I think about how much I paid for it. It's currently mounted on my 15-22 on top of a 1 inch riser, and I boresighted it last night. Maybe this weekend, I'll get a chance to test it out. Other people report that teh Fastfire series is a good all-around choice, and I hope I have similar results.

As for rail covers, I'm not convinced that's the way to go for me. I picked up some stuff from tacticool22 that will allow me to take off the stock hand guard and resplace it. Nordic Components makes a free-floating round hand guard, specifically designed for .22LR AR-style rifles, and I think that's what I want. Unfortunately, nobody (ie: Midway USA) seems to have them in stock. So, I guess I'll wait for that.

What I didn't like about the stock hand guard was the rails. Adding covers, just adds to the bulk. My wife was impressed with teh gun when she shot it, and I'd like her to keep using it (as long as I can get it back once in a while). I know she wouldn't care for the larger diameter hand guard created by adding rail guards. I can't say I would, either.

I don't have enough experience with your other questions to answer those, but I hope that helps.

If you don't want to add to the bulk of the rail, just get some ladder covers. Whatever brand, wherever you can find them cheap. Others may have a different opinion. I had the XTMs and they added a lot of width to my rail. I didn't like that at all.

For a red dot, it's been discussed a lot lately and you can find a lot of threads here on it. Comes down to what you like and what you are looking for. I have a BSA that I got for $25 and it's lasted through about 2,000 rounds with no problem. I also have a Primary Arms on my AR. I was hoping the BSA would fall apart so I could get another Primary Arms but so far, it's holding up.

Welcome to the club.

My suggestions are just my own preferences based on hands on experience.

Red Dot:
I recommend the red dots from Primary Arms. They have several good quality Aimpoint clones. The Micro is a T1 clone. The M3 and M4 are M3 and M4 clones. Both the M3 and M4 come in 2 versions, single 2MOA dot and a multiple reticule version. The M3 uses a CR2 lithium battery and the M4 uses a AA battery. The M3 has more mount options, especially if you want to run a magnifier in a flip to side mount along with the backup rear sight in place. I've been using the M4 multi for a few months now on my 15-22 and my 5.56AR and it has held up great. What they show on their website is what is in stock. I believe they are awaiting a new shipment of M4's in June.

Slings:
After handling many slings and testing a few in the military, I tried out the Emdom / Military Morons Gunslinger Sling. It is currently my favorite sling. It can be used in both 2 point and single point. It held up great while deployed to Afghanistan.

A couple other slings I like are the SavvySniper QUAD and Viking Tactics VTAC wide padded and the Magpul MS3. You can purchase them through their own websites or try SKDtac.com.

Tnx for the reply guys....will be checking out the different suggestions. Gee, this is fun and getting expensive at the same time LOL. But I guess I will work on the red dot first and the sling. Oh by the way TrackSol, will I need a separate attachment for the sling and where is the proper spot to attach it? If I remember it right the sling attachment is at the end of the butt stock which seems to be too far. If so, what attachment do I need? tnx

You can attach your sling to the buttstock, and some do actually like it that way. Others prefer at the end of the receiver, but unfortunately the 15-22's buffer tube doesn't come off so you can install a standard AR15 end plate with provisions for a sling. They are however drop in sling mounts that go around the buffer tube.

Check out the Midwest Industries MCTAR-13, MCTAR-14 or MCTAR-30 or the Troy Industries Professional Grade Rifle Sling Adapter.

I think I saw all of those on SKDtac also.

Me, I used 550 paracord wrapped around the buffer tube to hold on my Emdom/MM Gunslinger pigtail....

Congrats on the new S&W. These things are a lot of fun. Buy plenty of ammo you will go thru a lot of it real fast.
