What's up my righteous peoples... citizens of Earth and the good guys and gals homeys and homettes and everyone in between!

I last visited this forum on 7-12-2012, and when I say 'this forum' I surely refer to the 15-22 forum because I doubt I had ever cause to visit the M&P Pistol forum... until now... Woohoo!

As of oh, about 4+ hours back, I am the proud new owner of a S&W M&P Shield 9mm! And while I can't speak to a world of worldly experiences with it as of yet, I can say that I am very happy, so far so good and I am glad I made this decision (Although a few weeks from now, when I am hungry, I am sure to second-guess myself lol).

Since moving to FL in April, I have since got my Concealed Carry License and have adopted the CCW way of life. I had always just assumed I would carry my Glock 23 as it's a fine, well-known firearm that is used for concealed carry by tons of people every day. However, my 5'8" and 140lb. body simply cannot hide the gun very well. 8 weeks back I ordered an Alien Gear Holster Cloak Tuck IWB, which I had hoped would solve the problem. It took 7 weeks to come, and while it did definitely improve my carrying and help, it didn't solve the problem. I am especially noticeable when I carry w/ spare magazines, I guess just the weight of 2 15-rd Glock mags filled with .40 plus the G23 in the back, it seems like I just can secret the gun about my body 100% effectively... So I realized i needed a dedicated, "every-day-carry" piece... and I realized I needed the Shield.

I really did go through a thorough, thoughtful and time-consuming process of searching for information, considering many many options and trying to reconcile the benefits of perhaps going with an even cheaper option, saving a few more months for something more expensive, etc. and in the end- I came back to the S&W M&P Shield 9mm again and again.

So eventually, I went to the LGS, he had one, apparently they sell like hotcakes and he got this one only 2 weeks ago... We at first didn't see eye to eye on the price... and I could get it a lot cheaper by ordering online... I then pointed out his own website was offering it 30 cheaper than he was offering me... which he said was an "error" but he would honor it.. and I figured, I might have saved another say 25 bucks by ordering online but at some point, you just have to jump- I'd get the gun instantly, help the local business, etc. So I bought it and here I am!

So far so good! I haven't got to bust caps yet but I have broke it down, cleaned it up and oiled it, and have it loaded w/ Black Talons lol (I have a stash of them lol) ... And it just so happens that it fits (tightly) into the Galco Walk-a-bout holster I had been using for my G23, which I replaced with the Alien Gear...so for now at least I have a serviceable holster until I can get something more permanent.

Anyway thanks for having me and letting me tell my new-gun-glory-story... Feels good , walking the dog has never been so much fun now!

My wife and I both carry the Shield 9mm. It's a great gun, you'll find it to be quite enjoyable to shoot. Now layoff the caffeine and get some range time.

Regards,
Gregg

Yup I definitely plan on shooting it - the real issue is that where I live now in FL, the range is a good 45+ mins away. Not insurmountable I know, not at all, but back home in Jersey, I used to be able to hop in the car, hit the highway and cross into PA, and there was a range that was a 15-or-so-min trip.

I actually have 30 acres of land here that we will be building a house on, and I plan on a range, but it's still not really ready for that... But someday, I'll definitely be able to just go out back.

I am hoping to go with TruGlo TFO sights , if anyone has them on their Shield I'd love to hear the feedback.

Well... It TOOK you long enough to catch the Shield bug... But welcome back to s-w forum and welcome to the M&P section.

And congrats on 4yrs sober!!

[Edit to add]... As for the Truglo TFO... Check this thread: Fiber optic sights

I know not everyone can but having your own range is one of life's better things! We put a small range in and we use it almost daily during nice weather out shooting has improved a great deal. Living where you do you'll get even more trigger time.

Regards,
Gregg

^ I have always wanted land, and put it this way, the cost of our 30 acres and a nice, nice-sized house is going to be about the cost of an acre in our town in NJ. Plus we'd NEVER be able to shoot in NJ, it's basically zero-tolerance.

Down here, we did some mapping out, when we get our stuff together, I will be able to make a 600-yd-range for my Remington 700 precision/tactical build. I am not saying I'm an expert but still, it will be awesome to have a 600-yd-rifle-range (that is the best we can do, as far as the property layout, safety concerns, use of the land, etc.) out back (in addition to a pistol/shotgun/short-range-rifle range we can bust caps all the time at). I agree, especially with the .22s, I could see myself out there every night, more if it becomes a group thing.

Anyway thanks everyone, I appreciate everyone's support and open-welcome, etc.

Welcome to the M&P forum and the Shield "Club". I picked up my 9mm 2 weeks ago. Manager to get out just once so far. Pretty sweet.

600 yards you say. Is the property next to you available? ;)

You're not in my neighborhood, are you?

First of all....congrats on 4 years! I just finished year one of sobriety last week on the 23rd. CONGRATS!

The Shield is a little monster....I loved it so much I bought a full size M&P 9 also a few weeks later.

Regarding the night sights. I had TFO's put on my Shields when I purchased them (both for the wife and I). I love them, especially in daylight. I was at the range with both the Shield and the M&P 9 FS the other week and was amazed at how spoiled I'd become with the night sights. I was having trouble with the stock white dots on the full size, so I came home and installed a set of TFO's on that gun also. I haven't tried other night sights or big dots, so I can't compare, but I'm sold on the Truglo TFO's for now. It's amazing how well you can see them in bright sunlight. I have both front and rear in green, but others say mixing up the colors helps a bunch also.

Again, congrats on 4 years and the new Shield!

Craig

TruGlos

I have TruGlos on both of my Shields (9&40), along with the Apex Triggers. They made these great guns, almost perfect!

I have only 3 acres; but, it is very rural. I built a backstop out of railroad ties & logs. It's really great to just step out & fire off 50 - 100 rnds whenever I need to.

I think that you have made a good choice and will enjoy it more with each time that you get out to.

Congratulations on your permit and weapon choices.

I picked up my 9mm shield Friday and shot it yesterday and it operated at 100%. My meat hooks will have to work on not shooting low and left but that's the case with me and "small" handguns.

I had to LOL at this - I have had the Low n Left bug forever. I will say that I recently made a breakthrough of sorts - when I got down to FL I wanted to celebrate with a new firearm as a moving present etc. I would wind up taking advantage of a ridiculous sale on a SIG P226 MK25 for 774.15 - awesomeness. A month or so later, I happen to stumble upon a new Lasermax Genesis on a pawn shop eBay listing - and I won it, for $65 bucks... brand new, official not a fake etc. It went on my MK25 and makes an amazing HD gun. However, when practicing with the laser on the wall doing some dry fire and going through my DA/SA practice, I noticed I had a nasty jerk at the end of my shot, like a golfer with the proverbial hitch in the swing. Just the way I could see it illuminated on the wall by the green laser, goes a long way into understanding my shooting results and adjustment for better shot placement / accuracy et. Al.

Anyway its now The Next Day and I am very happy still. If I had an extra $200-$250 I would go buy 500rds of 9mm, take this Shield, my MK25, and G23 w/ LWD 40-9 bbl to the range for the day but alas, I spent most of my funny money on the actual gun so it will have to wait a while. I hate shooting anmo from the S&P stash. Thanks again to all

Welcome to the M&P Pistol forum, and congrats on the new Shield. If your 9 runs anything like my 40, you should be plenty pleased.

Congrats to you on all your successes. I just picked up a 9mm Shield about an hour and a half ago. I was considering a Glock 30, but the guy made me a better deal on the Shield at $315 and threw in a spare mag.(yeah, it was used, but looks like new)
I hit a point where I had nothing but large guns, and after heart surgery, packing "BIG" has become a less than desirable option.

Continued success to you, good luck and good shooting. :D

Congrats

hey congrats on the shield i just got mine W/O the safety :D last fri.. im off to the range with it this fri... im also in south fl, way south... got here in 96 from NC and im still trying to get back there to my outdoor range....

My advice to you................DO NOT LET YOUR WIFE SHOOT IT. You will be Shieldless in no time!

I picked one up last week and Shot 200 rounds. With out one hiccup!
I really like this pistol!

Hello folks. I'm a newbie (about ten minuets) here, and I am so glad I found this M&P Shield thread. I just got my M&P Shield 9mm last Saturday. Unfortunately I have not found time to get out and shoot it. I was going to wait until the gun show this weekend in Tampa but I found it on sale at Gander Mountain and couldn't resist. It came down to either a XDS or the Shield. I chose the shield with thumb safety. I hope the thumb safety isn't a mistake. I also have a CCW, but so far haven't actually carried. I also have a XDM .40 which I do love but too big to carry. I previously purchased a Remington R51, but experienced all kinds of issues the first time at the range. It is now in Remington's hands. Thanks for allowing me to join what I hope to be a fine group.

If you guys read my posts, you'd run from a Shield 9. However, I have a lemon in the process of being processed, so read my posts as info, not warnings. I have fired a friend's Shield 9 often, with no issues. He shoots mine, ain't so good.

The good news is that even at 25 yards I can hit center mass targets (BC-27) in a 6 inch group with tri-focals. In an earlier life, I would spend a day on KP for what I brag about today.

Hey FlCracker i read today The Fire Arm Blog that remington is replacing the defective R51's with new remanufactured ones plus 2 extra magazines and a pelician case for your troubles .. here's the link for the article and contact number a the end of the articale..

Remington To Replace All R-51 Pistols - The Firearm Blog

By the way congrats on the shield i got mine the day before you did... ;).. i have always been a glock shooter so im use to not having a safety so i just went in that direction.. i also was torned between the XDs and the shield but after going to my LGS and handeing them both i decided on he shield and im so happy i did...

Went out after lunch today to the local sporting goods store.
Had my wife try several small pistols in 9mm.
She said "This is the one!"
Now have a S&W 9mm shield for her with two mags. 7 & 8 rounds.
Now for her to shoot it, she is disabled.

So much to say and answer here, so I'd like to try to give a few different answers/responses here-

First to the Gunny, I wanted to say Thank You Very Much but please, I have had a million times more problems and failures than any successes but I do appreciate the kind words - Congrats on the new Shield as well, great minds think alike.. and God Bless on heart surgery, I can only imagine. I have had major spinal surgery at a fairly young age and while that sucked, I cannot even fathom heart surgery, God Bless and I'm hoping you found the perfect pistol (and maybe me too!).

Bumbury- also congrats- Now I did a little or maybe a lot of thinking about the safety.. and I mean no disrespect either way... all I will say is, I am happy with what i got, I made a conscious, hopefully informed decision, and I am comfortable with the results. I will say , my Father for example, he wouldn't carry it I'm sure. He is a DAO/no external safety guy, and I don't think he would get the safety version. I am happy with it for a variety of reasons but I would be also acceptable without, as my other two main guns in my G23 and my Sig MK25 both do not have external safety switches.

Florida Cracker- I'm also glad you got here, so go ahead and post away- Sounds like you made the right decision... Now I know lots of people LOVE the Springfield Armory XD/etc. line, but I don't really have much interest there... and I know I am happy with the Shield, I could even interest myself in a full-size M&P someday. But for now this bad boy is very adequate for it's intended role. And that's to be me and my Blue Heeler son's designated "Shield" lol. (Yupyup, I went there.) -- about the R51.... now I will admit this. If the R51 had been totally successful, I would have probably bought one already. I wanted one before I had considered the Shield.... it wasn't on my radar initially. But the R51 was having so many problems, I wrote it off. Did you see that they just announced they are replacing each and every one of them with an entirely new pistol ? Apparently the Remington engineers tried to say - the gun that was a prototype and the gun that came to be "The R51" out of production were not the same gun , and the result was a flawed product. They hope to ship the new gun by October, starting with the previous owners first, and everyone will get 2 extra mags and a custom designed Pelican case for their troubles... then the redesigned "new" gun will hit retail shelves. I just can't or couldn't wait , I am happy because I am a big Remington fan but, I had to shoot or get off the pot and as a result I got the Shield and that is that.

-hoc9, that sucks you had problems... all I can say is, I hope I nor others here have the same results. I will say that if my gun is bad, it's getting gotten-rid-of. Other than something minor/repairable , I can't have a EDC/CCW personal "Shield" that isn't tip top 100%. But hopefully it never comes to that.

In other news- something new is coming out from S&W in a few weeks- The Truth About Guns had an article about their recent tour and were shown a new product that hasn't leaked to the press yet and they were not allowed to mention what it is. I have no idea but I'd put my money on a Shield .45ACP or a new M&P Revolver/Bodyguard type deal.

- Another question if I may-

Is the Shield (and/or the M&P line, if there is a variance?) finished w/ "Melonite?" I can't find a single definitive source of the finish used on the Shield, it just all comes up as a " durable , corrosion resistant finish and a coated stainless steel slide & barrel" ... not a lot of detail there...

I am under the impression "Melonite" is a brand name of a nitrocarburizing process either exactly the same or very close to the process Glock uses, and then Glock uses another 'finish' over top. I have a very-late-model Gen 3 that was made in fall 2009, purchashed first week of 2010... (I didn't know there was a Gen 4 coming in a month)... I have had pretty much great results with the Glock. But I was reading that for various reasons, Glock finished using Tenifer and their exact 'secret formula finish' after the Gen 3 and perhaps earliest model Gen 4s, and *some* people aren't as happy with the Gen 4 finish (otherwise loving their Gen 4 guns).

So I am wondering what I have with the Shield and what I can expect... a Google search comes up with numerous threads on this very forum of people complaining about the finish on their Shields and other M&Ps... I am at the present using a holster not meant for the Shield which fits great but tightly, and I certainly don't want to ruin it with rubbing from the leather.

Ok thanks much as always.

Flex im glade your happy with what you got as far as the safety goes... im like you i did a boat load of research on both and handled both along with the XDs.. i normally carry a Kimber Tac Pro2 4in 45acp and during the summers well for that matter the winters well heck for that matter all year long...:D i was finding that it was just to big for the clothing selection here in south Fl... so i started looking for a EDC and was happy when i found the Xds and the Shield.... and i believe we got the better of the two... A little gloating here... :o...

as far as the dissrespect thing goes its not ever on the radar our choices for our equiptment are as unique as our finger prints and i always respect everyones choice's and opinion's..

Now your 2nd questions, after reading it you'v got me wondering about my choices for a holster... i have read the N82 Tactical pro is made with a polycarbonate which is supposed to be stronger but easier on the weapon... but who knows, as soft as leather is it will still wear out a finish over time... well i hope when you figure out the answer you'll post it here as im curious too..
