This is about single stack and double stack guns with safetys.
I always liked thin single stack guns because I don't mind carrying them on me because they are so slim and I can't feel them. But than I noticed that a single stack with a holster is as thick as a double stack gun with just a belt clip mounted on it. I think I want to go in that direction and get a double stack with a belt clip attached to the slide, but than I heard that it's wise to carry that set up with one OUT of the chamber because nothing is covering the trigger. If that's true, would it better to have a gun with a safety and keep one in the chamber so it's faster to activate the gun? Isn't it? Isn't faster to activate a thumb safety than to cock the gun? Or am I wrong? I think having a thumb safety is the best way to carry for ME, what do you guys think?

And here is the second part to the question:
(this part is if you AGREE that I should get a gun with a double stack with a safety)
What do you guys recommend for a DOUBLE STACK GUN, RELIABLE, COMPACT, WITH A THUMB SAFETY, AND ACCEPTS A RELIABLE 33 ROUND MAGAZINE (33 rd mag will not be for daily carry, it's for when I use it in a SHTF scenario. (I was thinking of the M&P Compact, but I don't like the ambi safety, it's too pertruding)

Let me know what you guys think.

Welcome from Wisconsin!

I'm afraid your questions are way above my pay-grade. I would consider moving to a safer place especially since you have your son on weekends. Are you being treated for your problem? If not why not?

In any event good luck to you. Don't become a statistic.

Welcome to the forum
I agree with MSG Glenn
As I understand it much of carrying and owning firearms for self defense is "situational awareness" Is your situational awareness telling you to move if possible? I know I may be simplistic but.
Especially if you factor in the "spacey" thing. Eliminate the need for the gun? ( as much as reasonably possible)

Yes I am. And I just figured out now that extra 2 paragraphs that I had posted was rather irrelevant to the main question I want answered so I edited it out, thank you.

Can anyone give me some advice?

It would be hard to carry concealed with. 33 round magazine. You may want to opt for an AR15 or MP5 style weapon instead of a pistol with that large a magazine.

Welcome from the panhandle of West Virginia.

A few things. First of all I carry an enclosed hammer J frame snubby and I would never consider carrying it without a proper holster that covered the trigger.
I know that if I need my gun, I'll need to just grab it and shoot.
If I were to carry a pistol, I'd want one with no safety and with a round chambered in a holster that covered the trigger with molded retention.
If you're comfortable carrying a single stack with a round chambered, in a holster that covers the trigger, I'd say stay with it.
In my opinion, the fastest way to activate a gun is to reduce the number of steps required for activation, just grab it and yank it out of the holster.

The only gun I can think of off the top of my head that can use a 33 round magazine is a Glock 9mm. They don't come with a safety but a gunsmith may be able to fit one to it.

The 33 round mag is for when I use it in conjunction with my bug out bag, meaning in a SHTF scenario. I want it to be a COMPACT pistol so I can use it on my hip for conceal carry with a NORMAL size compact mag, but if I am ever in need for a larger than compact magazine I can throw in a 33 round mag.

Howdy from Ohio...good to have you in the house! You should ask you questions in another section of the forum...you'll get better traffic and better insight/answers. Good luck!

M&P compact has a model with a safety, and is 33 round mag compatible, and it's compact. Everything I want, but I hate the ambi safety. Maybe I dremmel off the other sides safety? Or cut it off some how? Can I do that with a saw?

I was thinking of the SR9C because it has such a nice trigger, but it doesn't have a 33 round mag at all. I've heard somebody makes one, but I can't find videos of one or find one anywhere.

The Springfield makes a service model XD that has a safety and that has a 33 round mag, but it's not compact..

Those are the only manufacturers that I really looked into, Ruger, Springfield, and Smith & Wesson M&P Series..

Anybody have any information on any other guns that fit my criteria I definitely haven't checked all of them.

I think I'll do that, thanks.

Feel free to give advice I'll keep checking this thread.
Thanks everybody and I am awaiting replys.

Another welcome from Ohio!! srings gave you the best advice of going to the concealed carry or the semi auto section. This is the new member introduction section!

Welcome from Oklahoma. I have 40+ years of carrying handguns, including 4 law enforcement jobs, and now only concealed. I am also an NRA certified handgun guy. Your first question is very important. Any gun without a safety really should have the trigger covered with a holster of some type. Just think about those 3.5-5.5 pound glock triggers. Just shove one in your pocket and connect with a pocket knife or your keys, and boom. I once worked with a detective who had a model 59 SW in his hip pocket, while sitting at his desk. He leaned back in his chair and boom. Now, I love 1911s and have them in 9mm, 38 super, 45 acp and even 400 Corbon. I carry them in a holster, always. Carrying a handgun with an empty chamber is really not a good idea. If you pull the gun out and start to chamber a round, anybody could cover 8-10 feet and grab your gun. Or they could just stay back and shoot you while you go thru the process of pulling the gun out, getting your second hand on it, and jacking a round in the chamber. The first 1 or 2 shots are really the only ones that matter in 99% of gunfights. If you need thin, stay with a single stack in a holster or with an external safety. SW is now the importer for the Walther PPK/s in 380. There is not much difference in short barrelled guns stopping power, so caliber is not really relevant if you are only stopping people and not bears.

Now your second question. I have 25 round mags for my 3rd generation SW, and 32 round mags for my Ruger P90, and 33 round mags for my Glocks. They all work fine, just dont load them all the way up so you can save the springs. The only reason I really use them is when hiking, I throw 1 high cap mag in the backpack and then forget about spare ammo. If I shoot a snake or something, I can just pull one or two rounds out of the pack at my next stop....hope this helps....
