Hello,
I have been wanting a 4inch round butt model 10 for awhile now, and have never had a brand new S&W revolver. Does anyone know if the new classic has the internal lock or not? You would think a "classic" model 10 would not have it, but I guess it is possible. If it does it would be very disappointing, and may be a deal breaker for me. Thanks.

Well that stinks, I was really thinking of ordering one. I don't know how you can call it a classic with the il. Thanks for the info, even if it was disappointing.

All is not lost - with careful searching, you can probably still find a preowned but not fired since factory model 10-10 that is a 4" RB, pre-lock and at less money than a new 10-14.

I concur. You should put that money towards a 'real' classic. I don't see how they can claim classic on the new series when it obviously isn't like the original.

Fortunately, there are many thousands of true classic M 10's out there.

Lots available.

No reason to even consider an IL M 10.

Taking advantage of the sentiment in this thread I bought an as new in box blued round butt 4" heavy barrel Model 10 with internal lock for less than what a Bud's police surplus Model 10 would have cost.. There is nothing on the revolver or in the literature in its box indicating that it was part of the Classics line. Perhaps the name Classic goes on new 10s with tapered barrels. Believe it or not, when I brought it onto the property the sky did not fall down nor did the roof collapse when I carried it inside. Just like cars and nearly everything else they do not look the same as those from a few decades ago but S&W still makes good revolvers.

The receipt from when it was sold new was in the box. Guessing at what the pawn shop paid, the original owner took a serious beating. That is the biggest real draw back to buying a new Model 10.

The product code (or sku) describes the gun. A current production four inch Model 10 Classic is a 150786. A normal four inch M&P is 160125.

Like K22 Fan I did the same. Was looking for an earlier model because I wanted a RB 4 inch Model 10 to round out the collection and was having trouble finding in decent shape at a decent price.

Stumbled onto Gunbroker and found a 10-14, with the IL, for $299.00. The previous owner had, for some unknown reason, attached a clip draw device on a 4 inch Model 10 and I figure that plus the lock must have scared people off.

Get it in the mail with about $350.00 into it, with transfer and shipping, and have a very nice looking model 10.

Now just waiting on the free side plate screws Smith and Wesson was kind enough to send me so I can get it back to normal.

Sounds like you got a great deal on that 10-14, it may have been double that price new. I have always been a little nervous about using Gunbroker, but I have been thinking about trying it out.

Yes I was pleased.

I also stayed away from Gunbroker for a long time and then signed up a while ago when I wanted a 940.

I now have to stay away from it because I have found a couple things I wanted and my funds are not lasting as long as my wanting.

I think you just have to be careful and do some due diligence research in who has items listed. I have been lucky in both price and the quality of the 2 items I have purchased.

Im with you OP. I avoid anything with the lock. S&W would be wise to do away with the Hillary hole.

All while making countless hi-cap semi auto pistols with no positive safety of any kind.
They must think there is a bigger risk of revolvers being naughty little guns. Even if they are making one sit in the back corner of the safe ought to be adequate punishment for not delivering good groups.

whats alot worse than the il is the cheap internal parts inside the frame.
AND I MEAN CHEAP.

I'm curious - have you worked on any? The ones I worked on were actually better than the old style in terms of fit and finish. And I've not heard of any more problems with them over the older models.

The larger internal parts are made by metal injection molding (MIM). While they look a little different they work fine and have a reputation for having smoother working surfaces out of the box. As for the longevity of MIM parts, even with over 300,000 miles on it my MIM camshaft functions as good as new and I have no doubt something else will fail before it does.

The lack of rotational play at lock up, minimal end shake and timing of my modern Model 10 are as good as S&Ws get. When new the vast majority of 1970s and 1980s S&W revolvers were not nearly as good in any of those regards. While I do not dispute the old revolvers' better looks and higher values, having bought and tuned new S&Ws during those years gives a little more objectivity than reading the accolades for every thing old on collector forums.
