New owner in CA with some questions

Hi everyone, just picked up my new Sport 2. First time owner of any weapon. As a kid I shot .22 rifles so I'm not new in that regard. With the new CA laws, I was hoping to get some clarification here.
1. If I go "featureless", does that mean I don't have to register?
2. If I keep it as is, and do not register, does that mean I can't shoot it at any ranges?
3. What exactly will make my rifle featureless?
4. What do I need to legally transport from one point to another?
5. What are your suggestions for cleaning kits, cases, locks, carrying bags, etc?

1. If you go featureless, you don't have an assault weapon. So no registering required.
2. No range use. If you get stopped for any reason and they find an unregistered assault weapon, you're in deep doo-doo. If you're going to register, it has to be done NLT 31 DEC 2017.
3.Going featureless means the following. No pistol grip. No flashhider/suppressor. And No adjustable stock. That flash hider /suppressor bit may bite a bunch of people based on how the law defines such.
4. Must be empty. No mag-keeps the law happy. If you go any where no a school, it must be locked Best to do so in the trunk.
5. As to cases you can go either hard or soft.

You answer was excellent, but I'd like to add one caveat about long guns. What you've said is true, but long guns also need to be cased. The case can be anything. I forget the Penal Code citation, but I can get it for you if you feel you need it.

That to me has always been SOP, even when not required. Good thing you brought that up. Don't believe in giving any kind of excuse for legal hassles. So all guns are cased before I walk out the door.

And Mark40, for some of us moving is not an option for any number of reasons.

I would wait to see what President Trump will do for us in terms of that assault rifle registration law- it's a trap designed to get you acknowledge CA gov'ts definition on an assault rifle. There is already a law banning "assault rifles"-once you sign up, then Sacramento puts your name on a list and will hit you with a scary letter threatening you. I'm sure he's also well aware of CA's other anti-gun laws, and has NRA lawyers working towards getting them abolished (we hope). Anyways we have until 12/31/17 to register, if you so choose to do so.

He won't do anything for us. He can't do anything for us. This is our fight and we will have to be the ones to fight it. Relying on others to fight this battle is how we got here. We need to stand up ourselves and fight this with everything we have.
