An interesting subject. CCW in a church, by a responsible adult, is one thing but I'm not sure I'd feel good about students carrying in a college dorm or frat house. If the legislature is looking at allowing this I'd first like to hear from some campus police officers regarding their experience and see what they recommend.

You have to remember that in allowing students to carry, they must meet the qualifications that any citizen must meet........I believe the age for CCW is going to be 21 in all states. The only student to meet this requirement would be either be a campus senior, or a non-traditonal student. I am not sure about the senior, but I would have no problem allowing non-traditional students to ccw.

OK. I don't have a problem with it. As Retired LTC USAR said "...they must meet the qualifications that any citizen must meet..." to get that CHL. We haven't really had problems with CHL holders on any of our campuses (three campuses, several centers, about 100,000 registered students, and a district that covers 1,500 sq miles).

I'ts not the ones with the CHL that bother me, it's the ones that don't bother or can't qualify for a CHL who are carrying guns on campus that I'm concerned with.

Behaviors of the CHL holder may get our attention, but not the mere fact that they have a valid CHL, and so far the CHL holders have mostly not had attention getting behaviors (very, very few).

Administrators, some staff, some faculty and students get antsy at the thought of CHL holders on campus, but these are generally the same folks that don't think anybody except cops and the military "need" guns (and some of these even question the cops and/or military being armed).

Peace,

I would feel better with my CC in church. In the past 10 years or so, there have been several instances of crazies entering a church/sunday school and shooting up the congregation. In addition, there are groups in this country that are violently anti-christian.

I don't see any problems whatsoever with allowing qualified CCW in churches and bars.

But anyone who thinks guns in the hands of college students on campus is a good idea has not spent much time in a college environment.

Be safe.

Personally, I don't believe "guns in the hands of college students" on campus is any worse of an idea than "guns in the hands of college students" in churches or bars.

However, the Bill introduced in MI is about responsible adults that meet all the legal requirements for a CHL and have jumped the all the hoops to obtain one, carrying concealed while in church, in a bar or on campus. If a "college student" has a CHL, he/she ought to be able to carry concealed on campus as well as the other places.

Please note that carrying in a bar is not the same as drinking while carrying.
Intoxicants don't mix well with Guns, Cars or Marriages.

In recent months two (2) college students at universities in Maryland have discharged firearms while "settling" what were to be fistfights. One killed a fellow student with a shotgun; the other fired a warning shot. One is in prison for a long time; the other should be.

Notably, in both instances the situation involved a woman and a perceived slight. In both instances the shooter instigated the event. Victims in each case were male.

I am certainly not condoning physical violence in the form of a fistfight, but if every fistfight was avoided by a gunshot(s) the streets would run red.

Be safe.

Do you happen to have the ages of the people involved, and whether they were living off-campus or on?

Under the proposed bill in OK, people would have to be 21 and meet all OK qualifications to carry, and the college would still be able to ban keeping guns in college dorms.

Most opponents here keep talking about under-21 students living in dorms, who would not be eligible anyway.

Good questions. Will check ages and post update. They are young, however.

Re: where they lived, both were off campus but in very close proximity to campus. No more than 1/4 mile. Not campus housing.

Update:

Fisrt incident: Shooter (now convicted felon) 21; victim (deceased) 20. Second victim was shot and wounded. Age not given.

Second incident: "Victim" 19; shooter a college junior (age not specified.) Charges pending...

Be safe.

We had an incident with a college student off campus who had a party at his apartment. He stupidly left a pistol out and one of his drunken buddies picked it up and accidentally shot someone with it. I don't believe that he had a concealed pistol license, however. Alcohol and/or stupidity and guns certainly do not mix.

Remember about 4 or 5 years ago a 'student-athlete' @ Michigan or MSU shot a 9 mmm out of his dorm window down at the street? (He said he thot someone was stealing his car.)

I remember it happening, but remember nothing about what subsequently happened to the shooter or if the firearm was registered or not.

Obviously, he was in violation of having the firearm on campus/in a dorm since the law now being deliberated was not in effect @ the time.

I graduated from college at the tender age of 27 and had been a cop for six years. I carried my gun on campus and no one ever knew, except other cops cause they had theirs too. If a person is licensed they should be able to carry anyplace...I mean anyplace.....besides not everyone going to college is 18 and stupid...some of us old farts still go, seeking Masters, Ph'ds etc.....we either have a Constituional right or we dont. guns are they only right I know about that require a license and Im still trying to figure out why.......
