New radio for my elderly Ford Ranger

I thought about plugging a small AC radio, which I have, into an AC inverter, which I also have, and setting both on the passenger seat. But that would be taking economizing a few paces too far. I am not that poor, except maybe morally.

I tried using a battery home radio in a car once years ago. You quickly discover why they use an external antenna or at worst, tap into the rear screen heater.

My former employer went away from AM only radios in 2005 when it cost more to order them that way than the standard package. Yea, they really loved their workers.

Ex-Royal Air Force (RAF) buddy told me that the British taxpayer was paying Ford and GM to remove radios from cars ordered by the Ministry of Defence. Eventually, somebody in the UK equivalent of the fraud, waste and abuse department told the MoD to get real.

I remember in my alcoholic steel mill days that a $400 car was tops. Most had AM only. They used to sell those FM converters pretty cheap. I remember I had one of those reverb systems for one of my old cars. I was living large fer shur with that thing!! Many of my friends had cars that were so loud a music source was what came out the pipes.

I had forgotten about FM converters. My '67 VW Beetle had only an AM radio and I added an FM converter. I think it was fairly small, not much larger than a pack of cigarettes. I do not remember how it was connected to the radio. It did have a tuner. It converted FM signals to AM which could be heard through the AM radio. I have lots of good memories about that VW.
