Picked up my M&P at the shop today. It has some dings, a fairly noticeable scratch through the trademark under the cylinder latch, not sure the grips are correct, but it's in pretty good shape overall. Estimates from other sources date it around 1935 (serial 6536XX). I'll probably letter it just because I'm curious, not expecting anything exciting. It's likely to remain my only "old" gun for a while.

I put a few rounds through it after paperwork & payment. Two handed grip single action at 25 feet gave 9 & 10 ring groupings on a standard silhouette, one handed double action opened up a bit, but not unexpectedly so.

Pics are not great, I shoot handguns better than cameras! :p

Thanks. Might look for some original grips at some point later, if there are any available. Haven't done enough research yet to know the difference. Did I hear the term "high horn" somewhere?

I'm not a "real" collector (yet!), just liked the piece. A '76 Model 10 was my first "bought it myself" handgun.

Congratulations on your first Smith. Ya picked a good un! But you know, they're like potato chips. Impossible to stop after only one!!

I won't swear to it but I believe that refers to Model 40 or Centennial type stocks where they go all the way to the top of the fully internal enclosed frame.

Congrats on a nice old gun. You never know what a letter might bring. You might find out that your gun was a police department gun (my personal favorite). They all seem to shoot well. I took my old M & P out last year to the NY Police & Fire Games and while I didn't take home any trophies I had a heck of a time and alot of guys commented on the fact they were glad to see an old .38 on the line and not a polymer gun. Mine is a few years newer than yours, this one is from 1950.

Here's what the original stocks on your M&P most likely were.

It appears to be a nice enough example that it would benefit from having a set of these fitted. You could retain those later magna ones for whenever you go out and shoot it.

Thats a very neat unit Sarge, think Goony has pinpointed the correct grips also. My old M&P's are great shooters also, just plain fun all the way.

Thanks Goony! Appreciate knowing what they look like. Probably begin looking seriously this fall, need to give my wife & the checkbook time to recover. :)
