New shield, now what goodies for cleaning?

First off this is my very first post so I'll give a quick over view!

Was looking for a new conceal gun, got to a range to shoot a few rentals after reading reviews online, shot the shield 9, ruger lc9s, and the shield 40. Shield 9 I loved the feel and the way it shot, ruger just seemed way to snappy for me, shield 40 felt great in the hand but man shooting a 40 shield vs my XD 40 service model is a different breed so for this smaller gun I wanted the 9mm! Talked to my local ffl 375 plus tax should be in by the weekend. Needless to say I'm not prepared for it! I want to start off on the right foot and came here for some advice!

1. For cleaning and lube I think I'm going with the set up from Weapon Shield. Initially was going frog lube but read too many horror stories!

2. I need to get a nice little kit with brushes etc what does everyone recommend? I'll be ordering from Amazon most likely. And what about the Remington squeegee seems like a cool idea! Also bore-snake necessary?


Any tips/advice will be greatly appreciated! I've done a ton of searching so I know that the info is scattered around but most of what I'd seen is "any kit will do" I know some of you have a great little kit and I'm looking for more of, the xyz kit is what I use and is great or I bought abc kit and it was trash!

For simple cleaning after a day on the range I use a Boresnake with Hoppes 9 and FP-10 for lube. Has worked great for the past 8 years. When the breech face/extractor get a bit dirty I use Hoppes 9 and a nylon brush. Takes about 15 minutes tops.

I prefer the KISS method......

If what I'm reading is saying that you're new to pistols, I'd suggest signing up for an 'Introduction to Pistols' class, rather than trying to teach yourself. It's way too easy to think you're doing okay, when in fact, you may pick up a bunch of bad habits right off the bat, which might lead you to believe that the pistol is faulty.

A good 'Intro' instructor can give you some great cleaning and maintenance tips, as well as great Safety tips, and good 'Back to Basics' tips that can help you shoot any firearm.

For a good cleaning video, do a YouTube search for "Gun Cleaning 101" by FMG Publications. It's an Oldie but a Goodie.

I bought this cool cleaning kit from Amazon and all you really need is a bottle of Hoppe's #9 and a small bottle of Rem-oil and some cotton cleaning patches & a nylon brush (small old toothbrush works too) & you're all set.

Things that help...

The very best thing to do is read the instruction manual. People tell me to use hi tech grease when the book says plain oil is fine.

Q tips (the serious kind on a stick are best)
Pipe cleaners

I use plain gun solvent and oil. No fancy lubes on my present guns.

Nylon toothbrush

The main stuff is really all you need. You can add stuff if you think it may do something better, but the basics are adequate for most guns.

A can of 'Air' is good if you don't have a compressor to blow dust and residue out.

By all means clean it with Hoppes #9.
Then use it for aftershave.

I like to keep it simple. I also like the old-fashioned way, I guess...with a bore brush and cotton patches. To me, part of the enjoyment of shooting is the care for the gun afterwards.

Ah... You had me wondering for a bit.

I found, a few years back, that a Bore Snake is great to have at the range, if you're shooting your Carry pistol (which I always am). When done, I do a few quick swipes with the Bore Snake and the pistol's 'clean enough' until I can do a proper cleaning.

I know quite a few people who keep a can of CLP in their bag and spray down the bore, run the bore Snake through a couple times, and don't actually clean the pistol until a few K rounds have passed through it. I do that with my G19, G26 and XDMc. If the Shield wasn't my carry pistol, I could probably do that with the Shield too.
