New shield. Slide issue?

Hi guys, new here.
Just turned 21 a few weeks ago so this is my first pistol. Picked it up yesterday, ran 15 rounds through it. Cleaned and oiled very lightly since then. Using Winchester target FMJ 165g

I'm not 100% sure, but this just doesn't seem right and I had a friend confirm his 40c does not do this.
When I try to rack the slide with a round already chambered, if I do not let the slide go with force, it will not close the whole way.

If I load from the mag, it doesn't catch and completely stop, but I can feel it wanted to.

That's the problem. You have to let the slide go forward under full force. Many people with AK 47's have the same problem. When the slide is all the way back just let it go, & let it fly forward under FULL FORCE. Also the extractor could be prematurely worn by dropping the slide when a round is chambered. GARY

Congrats on getting your 1st pistol!
Especially when new, easing the slide forward, like you did the 1st time, can make it hang and not go into battery. the 2nd time, you let it slam home, as you should have, to begin with. When loading the 1st round, pull the slide completely rearward and just let go, as you would with a slingshot.

Since you're new to pistols, it'd definitely be worth the money to take an Intro To Pistols class, so you can learn this the right way, rather than trying to Self Teach, or learn from the web (or worse... From TV and Movies)

I would like to take a class for learning more on the carrying aspects.
I am not new to pistols or guns at all, but this is my personal first, I guess I'm a little paranoid about it.

So far I really enjoy it though, thoroughly satisfied with how it shoots being so small.

even if you're not new to pistols, if you haven't taken an Intro class, you should... If for nothing more than letting an instructor critique your technique and get rid of any bad habits you may have acquired along the way.

My Shield 9mm did that a couple times when first got it. After a couple hundred rounds through it....it runs like a champ. NO further issues. They are tight fresh out of the box.

You will have this issue with any gun that you baby the slide into position. I have a Shield 9 and a Shield 40; my wife ran into the same issue with her Shield 9. All you have to do is pull it back (or even press the slide release button) and let it close naturally.

I can't tell completely from your post, but it sounds like you are only saying that you are having this issue when you try to manually place a round into the chamber. If that is the case, then it is because the extractor is getting hung up on the back of the case. With enough force it can be put into the correct position, but it's better to always use the magazine to load a round into the chamber.

Rechecked this today and it's exactly as you say/show offshell.
Having to load from the clip to go 6+1 or 7+1 is kind of a pain, but I guess I can deal with that.

Think about what happens when you fire a gun. The slide moves back and forward WITH FORCE. I can make any gun I own not slide forward if I baby the slide. Guns are designed to work properly when subjected to the natural forces put upon them.

Also, I recommend not closing the slide on an already-chambered round. Do that enough time and you could end up with a broken extractor.

The reason you are having a hard time with 7+1 is because the gun is new. The spring in the mag. will loosen up with use. Some people have suggested leaving the mags loaded over night to help with the spring. On my 9c I had a hard time "topping off" the mag. I would load the 12 rounds in the mag. no issue. Load the gun with the 12 round mag.. again no issue. Dropping the mag after there was one in the barrel and topping off the mag and then reseating it, problem. I figured out that I was being too gentle. Inserting the mag with umph worked. If you are concerned with this, try it using snap caps or dummy rounds or a combo of both.

It isn't so much of a pain in that sense, as an inconvenience not being able to go one up, then load a full mag.
However, it is a tight fit for full rounds and getting the mag in, I'm used to that though.

I was having that problem with my new mags, too. I bought a speedloader which helped loosen the springs, and i dont have that issue anymore

I was just looking at speed loaders earlier today. What one do you recommend?
I think a speed loader and maybe a grip will be added as soon as I find a holster I really like.

Have the same issue with the 7 rounder, fill it up and it fails to seat. 6 rounds are fine. The 8 round magazine works fine with 8, though. I've always stacked one less round than mag rating for years anyway so I didn't concern myself about it too much, tbh.

I can get the seven round to seat, just takes a nice tap to the bottom.
I don't have an 8 round. I don't think they're available for the 40

40s only available in 6 and 7 round.
Load one in the chamber with a backup magazine, put in main magazine, top off backup magazine at your convenience.
