Let me start by saying that this is my 2nd Shield. I bought one for myself a few months back that I love and have no problems with at all (about 500 rounds). My wife liked it so I bought another one for her.

After bringing it home from the FFL I tested out the trigger with some snap caps. I immediately noticed that it was gritty and rough feeling compared to the silky smooth trigger on my 1st gun.

I field stripped the gun and cleaned it hoping it might help. However, I did note that the trigger pull is very smooth without the slide.

As I went to reassemble the gun, the slide would not pull far enough back to latch. I reseated the spring and tried again to no avail. I then noticed the spring looking as though it is bent and not sitting straight.

Needless to say I quite let down and will be contacting the S&W service tomorrow.

My spring is also the exact same way. No problems at all with mine! Let me know what they say, maybe we have defects.

Here are images of M&P Shield 40 and 9 springs after 1000+ and 400+ rounds respectively. Both appear identical to yours. Disassemble, check and reassemble as per User Manual. Sometimes it's just re-seating all the parts that works.

My Shield 40 is the same way. I just make sure to rotate the spring.

If your two pistols are of the same caliber, and if you think it is the return spring, have you tried switching them out to see how they perform in opposite guns?

The spring for my other Shield is similar but not nearly as pronounced.

I have rotated the spring several times, and still cannot get the gun back together. It appears as though something is preventing the slide seating properly by about 3/16".

I did a little more reading and troubleshooting and finally got the gun reassembled. There is about a 5 degree window of rotation on the spring that allows for the slide to seat properly.

I also think the grittiness of the trigger is being caused by the striker block. I read that the block bore can have burrs that could possibly be "catching" on the block.

I plan to call S&W this afternoon and will update this with their response.
