Recently purchase this revolver and have questioned several people as well as searched the S&W catalog all editions. Waiting on a letter. Does anyone have one or know something about them? The information on the code says nonfluted cylinder but this one has a fluted cylinder. It came with the original Hogue grips in the box.

This "Hostiles" 29-5 came as pictured with a square butt. Your box indicates the same. Joe

Have you checked the serial number on the gun with the serial number on the box out of curiosity?

It is the same serial number on box and revolver. Smith & Wesson customer service said it was made in Sept. 1994. The date code under Spec. Order can't be correct unless I missed something. Starts out with a 5 but then a 9? Maybe the letter will shed some light. I appreciate any questions and interest. Some information says 9 produced and other says 32.

OP - I am no expert, but I notice your box label photo shows "SB" under stocks, but the photo of the gun appears to be a round butt gun? The Hogue grips may have a SB outer profile, but are they SB conversion stocks that are internally cut for a RB? I believe S&W always considers a gun RB or SB based on the cut of the grip frame, not the profile of the stocks.

Got me thinking. I hadn't had the grips off and wondered during the night if it was a modified square butt. Nope.

My 8" 29-5 Classic came with Hogue conversion round to square Goodyears. Wanna sell the rear sight? :D

🤔 Thanks but I think I'll leave the sight where it is. I don't figure if the guy who put the scope on yours and lost the sight saved the box? I know there is someone with a 29-5 with the box that came with the modified square butt grips on a round butt frame. Please share what letters are under Stock.

I will check next time I am at my place in Washington, which is where that gun resides; unfortunately, I am at my place in southern Nevada. It's currently wearing Altamont's olive wood conversion Ropers.

UPDATE

Received attached letter today 10-7-23. It does show that SB under Stocks means square butt grips on this revolver. The company that it was shipped went bankrupt and no longer in business. Still wonder how many were made in this configuration.

Sorry about the picture rotation. Could not get it rotated right.

Here is my box and your box. I never did get mine lettered. Probably should. At some point. My ser. number is lower by about 220.

When researching mine years ago found this old add, and kept a copy. Just seems to muddy the waters. LOL LOL And a pic of mine with the grip removed. Was told yrs ago these "runs were done for a large distributor, but there is no way to know for certain." So I never really chased it.

Interesting stuff and I appreciate the correspondence by pm also. My letter says shipped in 94 which doesn't correspond with the spec ord number on mine either and the date code doesn't make any sense. Letter doesn't give any info on how many were shipped but the S&w catalog had the same few numbers you quoted in 2 places. Thanks again. Great place to find interesting information!

Frames

Sometime back S&W changed their forgings to RB only to cut cost. I believe it was in the early 1990s. RB or SB configuration was achieved by the grips, mostly rubber grips at that time! When using any aftermarket wood grips the conversion type were needed.
