I picked up a 4006 the other day and I few quesitons. First is the manufacture date, the serial number begins with VCH. The second is about the hammer. It has a hole it in, is that from the factory or is that an aftermarket hammer? Thanks.

I can't comment on the hammer, but the build date looks to be during 1994.

Yes, it is a factory hammer. I had one just like it that I had bought new. I haven't seen another one like it until your picture. I can't remember exactly when I had purchased mine, I'm guessing in the 1993-94 range, but that's just a guess.

Thanks for the response, I have never seen one like it before.

Mine has a MIM hammer also, but rather than the hole it is dished on both sides. I suspect this is to lighten the hammer. My 5906 is the same way.

Yeah, that's why I was kind of thrown off by this, I had never seen another one like it.

Good buy. Do yourself a favor and ditch those fat Hogues. I did, replaced with straight back factory grips, and it feels sooo much better.

I concur. I had a nice 4046 and those made the grip to fat for me to comfortably hold it.

That is a pre-MIM (machined bar stock?) hammer. Nothing wrong with MIM hammer that I know of, but this is old school cool.
