I've been wanting a 686 for a LONG time, and today I had an opportunity to purchase this 686+ for $600. It's in really great shape, tight and nary a scuff. I'm a happy camper tonight! It's S/N CJR50XX, and with a lock I'm guessing it was probably fairly recently manufactured.

Congrat's! Is that a 4" bbl.?

My CRWxxxx revolver was made in Sep-2011 so your's was probably made earlier in the year.

Did yours come with the factory box? The box's label & fired case envelope will have the exact date., if so.

Yes, it's a 4" bbl. It did come with the case, but I don't see anything on the label that would indicate the date, and unfortunately the fired case envelope was not included. Oh well, that gives me a good idea though. Thanks!

My latest L frame is a 686 Pro-Series. It is a 5" barrel gun. Have a 586 no dash, 4", and a 686-3, 6". No 2.5" though. Bob
Feb. 2016 on mine according to label. My "newest gun"

Congratulations! I would have to say you did quite well on that 1! Enjoy! Bob

VERY nice!! I just replaced the photo I posted of my "new" 686+. I took the first one last night and it wasn't a very good photo. Here are a couple of much better photos.

Here's a pic of the only label on the case.

The number is 6002. It's code for the ship date which is.......

Here's what the feature codes mean:

GR - Grips rubber
BF - Barrel full lug
SW - Sight white outline (rear)
SR - Sight red insert (front)
FS - Frame stainless
CS - Cylinder stainless
ZS - Finish brushed stainless

I just bought a 3" 686+ and as others have said it is a rock solid gun.
Congratulations on yours and get it out to the range.

Well, I took her to the range for the first time today and absolutely loved it. I've owned Models 64, 65 and 66 in the past, and when it came to the .38s that I shot it felt not all that different, all were very comfortable. The .357s were a breeze to shoot. I kept it at 10 yards for my first outing and the groupings were very tight. I shot 20 .38 WWB's, 14 .357s, then finished with around 80 .38 reloads. The 14 .357s I shot were 7 Tulammo steel casing 158gr FMJ (not advised - we had to use a dowel to tap them out of the cylinder), plus they were kinda wimpy compared to the 7 aluminum cased 158gr JHP Blazers which felt like shooting a freaking cannon. Rather than toss the Tulammo's I'll just take a dowel and small hammer with me next time to tap them out so I can use them up. All in all, after waiting a long time to get a 686 it's all the handgun I hoped it would be and more. Very, very pleased.

Glad you like it; the 686 Plus is one of my favorite handguns. Occasionally I read where some people claim that getting the seventh round in the Plus (1) makes the cylinder less strong and (2) adversely affects the trigger pull, all when compared to the six-shot, non-Plus 686.

Actually, (1), due to the location of the cylinder cut-outs, it can be argued that the Plus cylinder is stronger where it counts most and (2), having fired more than a few 686 and 686 Plus revolvers over the years, I defy anyone who pulls the trigger of either model blind-folded to tell any real difference(s) between the two (there can be and are, on occasion, differences in trigger pulls between different revolvers having the same model number but only because no individual gun can always be counted to be the same as another individual gun due to unavoidable manufacturing inequities. The potential for said differences is just as likely to occur within given models (i.e., 686 vs 686 and 686 Plus vs 686 Plus) as between different models (i.e., 686 vs 686 Plus).

Interesting info dgludwig. I tend to think along those lines too, that the locations of the cut-outs would make for a stronger cylinder if anything. I'm sure that I'll never be able to wear it out. As for the trigger, I think this one is even smoother than the ones on either the 64 or the 442 that I just sold in order to 'step up' to this one.

Congratulations. I recently acquired one myself and the trigger is like butter. Mine is from from 2009 with a lock. Hope you enjoy yours. Now I just have to find a snubbie to match. LOL. It is a disease!
