Here are some pics of a K-22 Masterpiece that I recently acquired. It came from a lady whose husband passed away. I am hoping that she'll be able to locate the box. It's in great shape with diamond magna grips that are numbered to the gun.

From what I've learned the 17-1 models with the left hand threaded extractor rods started in 1959. This 17-1 was shipped in January of 1962. It must have been a late shipment, as the 17-2 model change came about in 1961 when the trigger guard screw was deleted and the cylinder stop was changed.

Congratulations on a great purchase of one of my favorite S&W's

Great revolver, and great pics as usual!

If you ever find your way up here on Virginia's Eastern Shore, let me know and we'll go to my range and exercise all those great guns you've been picking up!

Tracy,

Thanks for the kind words!

Funny you should mention it, but we were up your way the week before last.. my husband and I had to go to Maryland and the DC area. Do you use one of the local ranges or have an outdoor range?

M17-1

Great photos- great gun! Don't get much better than a classic blued S&W with those beautiful diamond grips. Congrats.

Thanks for the new computer wallpaper!!!

Gun, grips and photos are first rate.

Awesome pics

and gun!!! Linda your photo abilities rival even Bill's. I love my K22, but its a beater next to yours

Yep,the K-22's are my favorites, and that one hasn't done anything to change my mind! Congratulations on acquiring a very nice one.

K-22

Absolutely gorgeous, both the gun and the pic! My favorite model too. Thanks for sharing!

She's a beauty Linda! Looks like it has seen little, if any, use! Love those 22s!

Beautiful! One of my favorites and harder than the dickens to find. Congrats...

Absolutely! 17-1's are more scarce than hen's teeth. Now to find one with the 8 3/8" barrel. :)

Awesome pictures too. I am envious of your abilities with a camera.

Linda...Though directed by S&W on December 22, 1959, the change to the left-hand threaded extractor rod was not implemented until 1962 (maybe a few guns were shipped in late 61, but I have not heard of one). The -2 model variation was introduced late in 1962 and the -1 and -2 variations were shipped together for a very short period of time.

This is true at least for the Model 17, 19, and 29, and probably the Model 27. A few -1s were shipped as late as 1963.

I hope when I go **** up my Model 17 will go to someone who appreciates it and is as proud to own it as I am, and you are.

Linda,

What a great addition to your collection! I should also commend your camera skills and "eye". The close-up of the medallion runs right into abstraction. Just beautiful.

Thanks,

Jerry

Bill, thanks so much for the clarification! I didn't realize the 17-1 wasn't implemented until 1962.

I knew they weren't that common and were a little hard to come by. It seems like every time I learn something, I also learn how much I don't know! :)

Linda,

Sorry for coming into this thread so late...

The 17-1's are very hard to find. Prolly more on the rare side then the scarce side. Bought the only one that I've seen. Drew whined and dined me, until I had to give it up. It was the one gun missing from his .22 Collection at the time. That should give you an idea of how hard they are to come by. BTW, it was a 8 3/8's barrel length...:D

i have several 17's but the -1 was a great find. a nice man from new mexico sold her to me. the best thing about my gun is that Mr Jinks told me that it was open on the books at s&w, witch means that it never left the factory. even if i get a factory letter it wont tell me where it was shipped. the man from NM is still tring to get me some info on it, i may never know where it went or why, it still a great gun and so is yours!
