I bought my PC627 'UDR' - or 'Blood Work' revolver - five weeks ago Saturday. A call that Monday re the ill-fitting Eagle boot grip yielded a pre-paid FEDEX Ground label - they picked it up 4/12 - it was at 'SAW' 4/14. The original call was met by a C.S. guy who saidfor what I paid, I should get grips that fit - he just didn't say when. A call back last week got me a promise of "I'll get you some by Monday.". Well, that came and went.

Has anyone gotten replacement Eagle grips for one of the new run of 'UDR's'? Thanks.

Well, my replacement came in - and what a beautiful pair of grips - striped kingswood, I think - dark & darker-black stripes. Obviously, they never tested them. Same gap at the top - and not long enough to reach the grip's heel with the s/n - some frame showing. They are proud of the backstrap and at the top and slightly below at the bottom. The real kicker - the black screw included is the same length as the Ahrends rounded non-fg cocobolo grips my UDR sports now. It is ~.25" too long - proud of the grip by ~3/16" - feels great in the old palm. Oddly, I can take any of my RB N-frame wood grips and interchange them between N-frames - including this new UDR - and they fit fine. It's definitely these Eagle grips. Awfully pretty.

I guess I'll keep the Ahrends on mine - and these will reside in the box. Aggravating - but, if they won't heed my written & verbal instructions - and make sure they fit before shipping them - what would be served by returning another set of grips? They shipped them from here FEDEX ground - shipped then back to me yesterday - FEDEX overnite! A lot of expense. I hope others have better luck.

S&W Customer Service

I had an issue with mine, sent an email with a photo to S&W. Received an email reply back from S&W within 1/2 a day, S&W mailed out replacement Eagle grips to me a day later when they had some in stock. Entire process took less than a week, excellent customer service by S&W with my transaction.

I have a number of UDRs. All bought from previous owners so I could not go back to S&W. The early first run (627-PC) examples I have featured well fitting Eagle Grips. Later runs (627-3) had ill fitting Eagle Grips. I called Eagle and ordered a new pair stating clearly my problem with how the grips fit at the top of the knuckle. They assured me they took fit seriously so I paid about 90 bucks with the shipping to get good fitting grips and when the new grips arrived, they were the same. I sent them back the same day and will never use Eagle Grips again. Fortunately there are a lot of other choices that look much better.

I think I have figured out the difference in the Eagle boot grips. They were made to fit the earlier production UDR with it's serrated backstrap. The latest pair that S&W sent me is beautiful, but fits worse than the originals - and came with a 1/4" too long grip screw. They fit similarly on all of my late '01 or newer N-frames. I finally tried my lone older N-frame - a 625-6 MG in .45 Colt from '96 - with a serrated backstrap. They fit it like a glove! There must be a minor difference in the radius of the outside of the frame just behind the finger guard. The Eagle grip is roughly shaped there - the Ahrends are finely finished - and fit old and new alike equally well. The Eagles fit the recent N-frames with a gap at the top and upper front. They fit that '96 version like a glove - and they are beautiful - but boot grips aren't appropriate on the MG.

In my E-mail to S&W I explained how the Eagle grips fit all of my newer N-frames equally poorly. I also said the JM and various Ahrends all fit the various N-frames perfectly. The S&W C.S. guy replied that he was sending me a pre-paid label for the revolver, because he wanted 'to see what was going on there'. Go figure. Needless to say, they won't see my new revolver. This exchange has not been S&W's finest example of good customer service - and I have carried their standard held high for them for some time. All I wanted was for someone there to test fit the grips on a recent N-frame before shipping them to me. There was a time when a 'Performance Center' revolver was pretty good, QC-wise. Gripped as mine - and the others shipped to my pusher were - that just isn't the case now.
