New York’s proposed gun free zones

Yes, you can now obtain a permit to CCW, but there will be very few places where you will be allowed to use that permit. Backdoor tactic, expect legal challenges in the years to come.

Carrying a firearm concealed should be mandated by law in the NY City Transit System.....standing on a platform waiting for an incoming train you can be easily thrown onto the tracks by one of the legions of deranged individuals who actually RESIDE in the subway system.

Exactly!
If a business, church, school, state or municipality is going to forbid you from exercising your constitutional right to protect yourself and others, it becomes their duty to protect you, assuming full responsibility/liability for your safety while you're in their "sensitive area". As a retired cop, I know help is only minutes away, when it was needed a half a second ago.

I really have to question the logic (or complete lack thereof) that Gun Free Zones are an effective deterrent against gun violence.

Honestly, do they seriously believe that anyone with the capacity or intent to shoot up a place is going to be deterred because of a few signs telling them that they aren't authorized to carry a firearm on the premises?

"Well gee, I was planning to commit mass murder here, but it's a gun free zone... *sigh* Guess I'll have to find somewhere else..." -- Thought no one ever

Seriously, do these people even understand what a criminal is?! I'm sorry, but the peak stupidity at work here is completely baffling.

The gun free zones are symbolic virtue signaling by people who believe in symbols. Kinda like unarmed security personnel. I think the real intent is to make it so inconvenient to carry that people won't.

What I'd really like to see is mandating that gun free zones provide safe storage for those who may be armed and have/want to enter. When I lived in another state I can recall strolling into the county courthouse/office building and stopping at the Sheriff's Office to store the hardware. I expect it's way different now.

Lawmakers in NY move at lightning speed when they have something that negatively affects lawful people.

They only care about exerting their authority and power over the people...not whether it accomplishes their stated aim.

It's a sad state of affairs. I imagine those of us who carry under LEOSA will eventually have to bring suit against NY to protect carry rights guaranteed under federal law.

Glad I decided to flee NYC in 1987 after serving as an LEO there for four years, (and having lived there all of my life up to that point).

Yep, "gun free zone" = soft target, the preferred choice for those who want to increase their odds for successfully creating the most carnage.

And, of course, an election is on the horizon!

And I'm advised, by someone with connections to the minority inside, that exemptions will exist for Active and Retired LEOs as well as NYS certified armed security guards.

As a NY resident who already has an unrestricted permit, the state wants a pizzeria owner to dictate when I can exercise my 2A rights. It would be laughable if it wasn't true. Many local constitutional lawyers and politicians are promising law suits. This will probably end up on the door of SCOTUS as well. Three yrs and counting till I join the mass exodus from this state.

Montana legislature on gun free zones

Part of HB102 which authorized permitless carry

(4) Zones where guns are prohibited provide an increased risk to the health and safety of citizens because these zones create an unreasonable expectation of government-provided safety, while that safety cannot be provided or ensured.

Another Montana code
45-8-360. Establishment of individual licensure. In consideration that the right to keep and bear arms is protected and reserved to the people in Article II, section 12, of the Montana constitution, a person who has not been convicted of a violent, felony crime and who is lawfully able to own or to possess a firearm under the Montana constitution is considered to be individually licensed and verified by the state of Montana within the meaning of the provisions regarding individual licensure and verification in the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act.

How would being armed prevent that happening?

Exactly!

What about the property owner's Right to decide what they permit on their property?
