Welcome to the Forum. At that time, the fixed sight model 21 and model 24 Target would have been available, but were made in small numbers and probably difficult to find.

Well a local pawn shop has one. I cannot remember the model but I know it was .44 special. I would say 65% condition. They wanted $425 for it. I think it is too much but not sure.

How worn can a piece be before it is just a shooter and not collectible anymore? Does it vary with models?, since some models are not very available due to higer production.

Unless it`s a real worn dog, you couldnt go real wrong for $425s! Does it have fixed or target sights? 4" or 6 1/2" barrel?

You will get lots of opinions regarding "collector grade", but as a rule the less common the gun the more their value is maintained, even in lower cosmetic condition if there is finish but little or no metal damage/wear.

I agree that a mechanically sound S & W .44 would be worth $425, especially the fixed sight model 21 but also the 24.

where's that shop?

BTW, where did you say that shop was? :D

I concur $425 is a really decent price for that revolver as long as it's in excellent mechanical condition. To me the revolver in 65% condition would be a shooter grade revolver unless it's a very rare model or was documented to have been owned by someone famous. Others may disagree but that would be my thoughts on it.
