No, not the book by Victor Hugo, but my Mama.
She is 93 today. She was born during the Spanish Flu epidemic. She has lived through a Great Depression, a World War, a Cold War, numerous undeclared wars and lesser recessions, and good times and bad on the farm. She is a 39 year breast cancer survivor. She worked about 20 to 30 hours a week at the local library until she retired last month. She intends to vote for whomever runs against Obama in 2012. Her life has been devoted to taking care of her husband and her three sons. She has the greatest faith in her Savior of anyone I have known. She sleeps with a Model 37 Airweight Chiefs Special by her bed. Up until a few years ago, she wore it on a belt holster when she took her daily walk. She is an inspiration to everyone she comes in contact with. I wish I was just half as tough as she is.
The above is mostly a copy/paste of what I posted two years ago. I don't know a whole lot more to say. Her health isn't as good as it has been; she has been having a lot of pain in her legs. The Doc said her spine is "a mess," but she bounces back from the episodes of pain very quickly. Her mind is as sharp as ever. Often when I call and tell her I am going somewhere, or taking my family somewhere, she says, "Don't forget your pistol."
She went to work at the library when she was 68 and retired last month. The picture below is from the retirement reception they had for her. She is proud of her sons even though none of us have amounted to much. I am the good-looking one with the gray beard and Wilford Brimely mustache. Our older brother might not look so big between us, but don't be fooled . . . he runs about 285.
