Not Really a Bear Thread

My feelings are...if you find yourself needing to grab your sidearm because a Grizzly is about to get a hold of you, things have already gone terribly wrong and you are in for physical harm even if you get a shot or 2 into it. But at that point, a short barrel .44 with stout ammo and bullets will be a good thing provided you get a hold of the gun and can make one count in time.

Who needs another caliber? Unless the shelves run bare, then the need for alternate ammo launchers rears its head.

That is one ugly gun. It will never reside in my safe with my beautiful Smiths! Don't care what caliber it is in! Gez! At least get a .500 Smith.

Heh.. I did!! Not that I'm after any bear but I'm prepared if those pesky elephants show up again this year to raid my apple trees....:D

I guess that's what makes the world go around. I have 3 S&W revolvers and all 3 are beautiful (29, 686 and 642). I just do not care for the X-Frame revolvers, I find them to be ugly. The Toklat is not the most beautiful gun either, but I bought it hopefully to sell anyway.

I think this might be just barely a bear thread.

Speaking of dying, has that Ruger Toklat died or is it still on the market? That thing is every bit as ugly as the X-frame Smiths, maybe more so. (smile)

Jeez, nobody likes to say your baby's ugly, but...

Ruger makes some HD stuff, I've got some in my safe. BUT: the idea of buying one of these "things" with the idea of selling it a gain might be a bit of stretch. I don't doubt that it would stop a bear - you probably wouldn't even need ammo. Just skin that thing and show it to the bear - that'll probably be enough right there. I'll take my chances with my old 29-2, thanks just the same.

In honor of the thread's (almost) 3 year anniversary, a photo of the gun in question. To me it is either a short Super Redhawk or a longer Alaskan; 5" barrel with extra machine work to taper the barrel. It's, um, interesting...:)

This thread's resurrection proves S&Wforum members are hungrier for bear threads than grizzly bears are for our meat.

I would have preferred the extra machine time spent cutting the sides of the barrel was spent cutting cylinder flutes. While the Redhawk's appearance is an acquired taste they are do not look too bad with a round barrel, cylinder flutes and the Lett grips originally installed on GP-100s and Redhawks. Those Hogues are butt ugly.

The ear splitting .454 option can be ignored and cowboy .45 Colts fired for an enjoyable day at the range.
