I have gotten an interest in finding a M36 or M60 NY-1 revolver. I have seen pictures of the M60 but not the M36. Does the 36 exist? And additionally, what is the latest dash number manufactured and are they all plus P rated?

OK, that was more than one question, but you get the drift. Tell me more about all the NY-1 models please.

There is some great info on here by some retired NYPD guys. Do a search for NY 1 . I think they were all double action only, and NYPD is the reason that the sights on the 60 were widened from the skinny blade it was at first.

Thanks, I only seem to think of the search function AFTER asking a question.

Sorry, I'll try to remember next time.

As far as I know there wewre no model 36 NY1. They were all stainless, either model 60,or 64.

Thanks, after doing the search I found that is likely true. I remember seeing these guns at gun shows in the 90's and always thinking "I should get one of those."

So, why didn't I?

Hi My brother is NYPD retired in 2006.He joined the force in 1986 and he was issued a Smith and Wesson Model 64 revolver in a six inch barrel. This gun was not a DAO with the Hammer spur removed. They stated to do this with the ruger security six and s+w in the late 1980's.They made the conversion to the semi auto 9mm in the early 90's and to this day they have a choice of Glock,S+W,or Sigsaur in the DAO configuration and the killer 14 lb "NYPD Trigger".The revolvers are still plentiful in the used market ......God Bless......Mike

The Only S&W NY-1 marked guns are the Model 64 in 2, 3 and 4" barrels as well as the model 60. The S&W model 36 was a authorized off duty revolver but had no special markings on it to designate it as a NYPD revolver.

Cruiser the NYPD never issued 6" barrel revolvers so I am positive your brothers gun was a 4".

Up until 1986 all NYPD revolvers were blued and capable of both double and single action.

In 1987 the NYPD switched to Stainless Steel DAO revolvers.

In 1993 the NYPD transitioned over to Semi automatic pistols.

That GB auction is for one of the guns that never got sold at the equipment section and therefore never made it to the NYPD range for inspection by the Dept Gunsmiths and the S&W factory reps. If it was the gun would have the inspection mark on the inside of the frame by the NY-1 stamping. Like the letter says this little guy was shipped back to S&W and converted back to double/single action and sold to the civilian market.

I think its a good buy at the starting price.

Check the post and it says, according to Mr. Jinks that it was in fact the real deal. And BTW the stamp is one the gun. I looked at it yesterday along with the letter.

As for it being the real deal, I never said it was not. What I was trying to explain is that the gun never left the NYPD Equipment section shelf before it was traded back to the S&W factory meaning it was never purchased by a officer for use as a backup/off duty.

As for the inspection stamp I could not see it on the gun from the photos posted but that just may be because of the lighting.

Being you had the opportunity to see the gun in person can I ask how the timing and lockup on the gun were?

Still a nice gun for 300.00

I have a 4" model 64 NY-1, DAO. I was thinking the gun was going to have a horrendous trigger pull, being that it is DAO. Definately not the case with this one. It has a very nice trigger pull that is clean all the way through. Not to mention the gun is very accurate, and is alot of fun to shoot.

Recently I picked up a NY-1 64 2". I was concerned that maybe I paid too much at $399 but I am very happy with this revolver. Great trigger and fun shooter. Pick one up if you can find one.

I guess I'm lucky. I have two NY-1s: a 3" and a 4". The 3" resides with the better half and the 4" is a semi safe queen.
